Antonio Reginaldo Pizzonia junior (born September 11, 1980 in Manaus ) is a former Brazilian automobile racing driver .

After several championship titles in national formula series and two years in Formula 3000 , Pizzonia was active in Formula 1 from 2003 to 2005 and started 20 races. He did not play a single season. He then competed in individual races in several racing series. Between 2008 and 2011 he took part in three seasons of the Superleague Formula . Pizzonia has been operating in Stock Car Brasil since 2007 .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (1991-2000)

Pizzonia began his motorsport career in karting in 1991 . After winning the city championship, went to kart races on the weekends in São Paulo in order to be more competitive in the races there. In 1996 he won the Brazilian Kart Championship. Then he made his debut in the United States in the single-seater racing and was immediately second in the US Barber Formula Dodge . He also competed in Europe for the first time in a race in the British Formula Vauxhall Junior winter series . In 1997 he entered the regular championship and was runner-up. The following winter series he decided to start Lewis Motorsport for himself. In 1998 Pizzonia stayed with Lewis Motorsport and also won the drivers' championship in the British Formula Vauxhall Junior. With 186 to 163 points he prevailed against Richard Lyons .

After the season, Pizzonia switched to Manor Motorsport and competed in the British Formula Renault winter series . He won all victories and won the drivers' championship. In 1999 Pizzonia competed for Manor Motorsport in both the British Formula Renault and the Eurocup Formula Renault . In the British Formula Renault, Pizzonia won 11 of 13 races and won the championship. In the Eurocup he was defeated by Gianmaria Bruni with 196 to 216 points and achieved second place overall with four wins from nine races. As a bonus for his achievements in Formula Renault, Pizzonia received a Formula 1 test day with the Williams racing team. In 2000 Pizzonia stayed with Manor Motorsport and took part in the British Formula 3 Championship . He won 5 of 13 races and won the championship with 200 to 161 points ahead of Tomas Scheckter . This year Pizzonia completed Formula 1 test drives for Benetton and Arrows .

Formula 3000 (2001-2002)

In 2001 Pizzonia switched to the International Formula 3000 Championship and competed for the Petrobras Junior Team , which is supervised by Super Nova Racing . Pizzonia won its only Formula 3000 race in Hockenheim . He finished the season with 22 points in sixth place and was thus defeated by his teammate and compatriot Ricardo Sperafico , who had reached fifth place with 24 points. Both Pizzonia and Sperafico completed Formula 1 test drives for Williams after the season.

Another season in Formula 3000 followed in 2002 for the Petrobras Junior Team. Pizzonia was on the podium once with a third place and ended the season in eighth place. Internally, he lost again to his team-mate Ricardo Sperafico, who defended fifth place. Sébastien Bourdais , who drove in the sister team Super Nova Racing, won the championship this season. Pizzonia was also a Formula 1 test driver for Williams in 2002 . Despite his mixed Formula 3000 results, he received praise from Williams team boss Frank Williams after the season , who rated him very highly.

Formula 1 (2003-2005)

For the Formula 1 World Championship in 2003 Pizzonia received a regular cockpit in Formula 1 from Jaguar Racing . Together with Mark Webber , he formed the team's new driver duo. While Webber made it into the points several times, Pizzonia remained without points with a ninth place at the Austrian Grand Prix . After the eleventh race, the Grand Prix of Great Britain , in which Pizzonia retired with an engine failure, Jaguar parted ways with Pizzonia. Although Pizzonia had his teammate Webber under control in his last race and had driven one of his best Formula 1 races to date, Jaguar was not satisfied with its overall record. Justin Wilson replaced Pizzonia . Jaguar originally wanted to replace Pizzonia with Alexander Wurz after the fifth race . Its commitment failed, however, due to excessive demand for replacement from Wurz's previous racing team McLaren . Pizzonia was offered the position of Jaguar test driver, but turned it down.

In 2004 Pizzonia returned to Williams as a test driver. After the regular driver Ralf Schumacher had to take a break for some races due to injury after an accident at the US Grand Prix , Pizzonia received his cockpit for four races. Williams initially fielded Marc Gené , Pizzonia's test driver colleague, but he remained without points in two races. Pizzonia finished seventh at the Grand Prix in Germany , Hungary and Italy , scoring points. At the Italian Grand Prix, Pizzonia reached a top speed of 369.9 km / h in the race. In doing so, he set a new speed record in Formula 1 and replaced Michael Schumacher , who had set this record a year earlier on the same route at a speed of 368.8 km / h. In the driver standings, Pizzonia achieved the best result of his Formula 1 time with 15th place.

Williams had already signed Webber for the 2005 Formula 1 World Championship . For the award of the second cockpit, Williams organized a shoot-out between Pizzonia and Nick Heidfeld . Heidfeld won these duels 5-2 and was finally given the cockpit, while Pizzonia remained a test driver. Due to an accident by Heidfeld during test drives, Pizzonia was again used by Williams at the Italian Grand Prix . Right away he managed to get two points with a seventh place. After a bicycle accident, Heidfeld dropped out for the rest of the season, so Pizzonia completed the remaining four races. With these he remained without points.

For the Formula 1 World Championship 2006 , Pizzonia was not taken into account at Williams, who had signed a new driver in Nico Rosberg .

Engagement in various racing series (since 2006)

In 2006 Pizzonia switched to the North American Champ Car series for Rocketsports Racing . After finishing tenth in the season opener, however, he lost his cockpit again. In the further course of the season he was used in three other races in the second Rocketsports car. Pizzonia was 18th in the drivers' championship. In 2007 Pizzonia returned to the Formula 1 supporting program and received a cockpit in the GP2 series , the successor to the Formula 3000 series at FMS International. After scoring a point in the first three events, he was replaced by Adam Carroll . The rest of the season he competed in the Stock Car Brasil , a Brazilian touring car series . It was his first touring car races. A 15th place was Pizzonia's best result. Since 2007, Pizzonia has started in both formula racing and touring car series.

In 2008 Pizzonia initially took part in a race in the IndyCar Series . He started again for Rocketsports Racing. He then received a cockpit at EuroInternational in the Superleague Formula , a new racing series in which the vehicles represented football clubs . For the second event, Pizzonia replaced Andy Souček in the Corinthians São Paulo car . A second place was Pizzonia's best result. In addition, he continued his involvement in Stock Car Brasil. A 13th place was his best result in this championship. In 2009 Pizzonia started the season in Stock Car Brasil and got out during the year. With a third place at the season opener, he achieved his first podium finish in a touring car this year. He was 15th in the drivers' championship. In the Superleague Formula , he switched to Alan Docking Racing , who looked after the Corinthians vehicle this season. Pizzonia took third place twice.

In 2010, Pizzonia was only active in touring car and GT series. Although he competed the entire season for the first time in the Stock Car Brasil, he lost some positions in the drivers' standings and finished the season with a third place as the best result in 23rd place. He was 19th in the Brazilian GT3 Championship. In 2011 , Pizzonia returned to Alan Docking Racing in the Superleague Formula. However, the season was canceled after the first two events. Pizzonia started for the Brazilian national team and achieved two podium finishes in five starts with a second and third place. He was also active in several Brazilian touring car and GT series and took part in individual races.

In 2012, Pizzonia had its second full season in Stock Car Brasil. With a fourth place as the best result, he was 15th in the drivers' championship. He also took part in a race in the Brazilian GT3 championship. In addition, he made his first experiences in a long-distance race at an ALMS race for Conquest Endurance . In 2012, however , Pizzonia made headlines in formula racing . For the Brazilian event of the Auto GP World Series in Curitiba , he received a cockpit from Ombra Racing . Without having previously participated in test drives, Pizzonia managed to win its debut race. One day later, Pizzonia benefited from the failure of a competitor in the sprint race and won this one too. Pizzonia's two victories were the only podium finishes for an Ombra driver in the 2012 season. For the subsequent race weekend, he was given a cockpit at Zele Racing , but after a failure in the first race he received no points. In the overall Auto-GP ranking, Pizzonia finished ninth at the end of the season.

Personal

Pizzonia was born in Manaus, a metropolis in the middle of the Amazon rainforest , and thus comes from an environment that is very different from those of those compatriots who dedicate themselves to motorsport and mostly come from São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro . British racing journalists who like to label drivers with memorable labels quickly gave him the nickname Jungle Boy . Pizzonia is married to the athlete Maurren Higa Maggi .
