The Aftokinitodromos 8 / Αυτοκινητόδρομος 8 ( Greek for 'Highway 8') in Greece connects Athens with the port city of Patras in the northwest of the Peloponnese . In 2008 the motorway was handed over to the Olympia Odos consortium as a PPP project , which undertook to develop the road into a complete motorway.

The length of the motorway connection is 215 km (Patras-Athens). Sections of Autobahn 8 form part of European routes 94 , 65 and 55 .

The A 8 passes through and affects the cities and metropolitan areas of Athens, Megara , Corinth and Patras.

Highway 8 at Aigio

The Autobahn 8 largely replaces the National Road 8 and the National Road 8a . It runs from Athens along the Saronic Gulf over the isthmus of Corinth to the Peloponnese in its northern part to Corinth. From Corinth it leads along the sea ( Gulf of Corinth ), past the strait of Rio-Andirrio with the Rio-Andirrio bridge to Patras. Deviating from the old national roads 8 and 8a, a motorway bypass leads from the east of Patras around Patras and joins the national road 9 , which continues as a country road to Pyrgos in the west of the Peloponnese.

The Athens – Corinth section is part of the European route 94 , the Corinth – Rio section is part of the 65 European route and the Rio – Patras section is part of the 55 European route .

particularities

The highway 8 from Athens follows the course of the national road 8 or 8a to Patras in the city center. Before the expansion to the motorway, a dual carriageway (two lanes with a hard shoulder, oncoming traffic without median) was led from Athens via Corinth to Patras (national road 8a). From Corinth to the Rio triangle, Autobahn 8 uses this lane and, strictly speaking, is no longer a motorway. Only in the area of the junctions and exits is the route developed with two directional lanes (two lanes and one hard shoulder).
