Mini (spelling: MINI ) is a new edition of the British small car Mini that was created at the beginning of 2001 under the leadership of the BMW Group . The exterior and interior were modeled on the classic model, but the size corresponds to a today's small car. Mini is both the name for the individual models and the name of the main model. The main model has been offered in the third generation since 2014.

History of the brand

Mini in Munich

Mini models were originally offered under various brands such as Austin , Morris , Wolseley or Riley and built under license from Innocenti and Authi . Later, however, the owner BMC (later British Leyland, Austin Rover and finally Rover Group) began to treat Mini as a separate brand and used different variants of the well-known logo with the winged "MINI" lettering. This brand came to BMW with the takeover of Rovers.

The development of the Mini as a modern new edition of the Mini began by the MG Rover Group in the 1990s after BMW had taken over completely in 1994. Before the development was finished, BMW parted with Rover again, but kept the “Mini” brand and relocated further technical development to Munich.

Production of the Mini was based at the old Morris Cowley plant in Oxford . Until then, the Rover 75 had been manufactured there, whose production was relocated to Longbridge near Birmingham. The plant was renamed BMW Works Oxford and modernized for the production of the current Mini. Individual parts are manufactured in the plants in Swindon and Hams Hall, the Mini Countryman and the Paceman in the Magna Steyr plant in Graz (Austria).

At VDL NedCar in Born, the MINI has also been made to order since summer 2014.

Sales figures

In 2013 a little more than 300,000 Minis were sold worldwide, 1.2% more than in 2012. With a share of 42.1%, the three-door basic model Mini Hatch was the best-selling car of all the Mini models. In 2013 there were a total of 34,263 mini vehicles in Germany.

The new Mini was available in various equipment and design variants from June 2001: As Mini One D (55 kW / 75 PS) ("D" for diesel), whose engine comes from the Toyota Yaris . As a petrol engine, there was the Mini as One (66 kW / 90 PS), Cooper (85 kW / 116 PS) and Cooper S (125 kW / 170 PS; with supercharger). The three 1.6-liter in-line four-cylinder petrol engines were from Tritec, a joint venture with Chrysler , and were manufactured in Brazil.

The Mini has a different spatial concept than the example cited. At 3.64 m, it is significantly longer. The actual Mini was designed as a car for people with little money and little space. The wheels were particularly small so that they did not protrude far into the interior.

The new Mini from BMW, on the other hand, is positioned as a sporty lifestyle vehicle with go-kart- like driving behavior. Reliability and workmanship left a lot to be desired in the beginning, but in 2003 the model achieved 1st place in the ADAC's "small class" breakdown statistics and in 2004 2nd place.

Models and Features

Rear view

The individual models can be distinguished by their external features. The Mini One and Mini One D always had the roof painted in the same color as the car and the louvres of the radiator grille and the exterior mirrors in black. The Mini One D also had the "old" front and rear aprons, which were also present on the Mini One and Cooper until the revision in summer 2004. The roof of the Mini Cooper was optionally painted in the body color, but also black or white. The grille was chrome-plated.

The Cooper S had a radiator grille in body color, a separate air intake (a so-called scoop), a double-flow, centrally located exhaust and other front and rear aprons. They also differ in terms of their engine and equipment features. In August 2004 the product range was given a facelift and expanded to include the convertible versions.

Mini convertible (2004-2008)

Mini convertible (R52)

The mini convertible was presented at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show . The convertible has a fully automatic soft top that, similar to a sunroof, can only be opened partially. The tailgate is folded down like a pick-up, as it was with the classic Mini. The rear window is made of glass and has a heated window. The Mini Convertible was introduced as the One, Cooper and Cooper S.

Special models

The special models of the Mini each have an individual equipment package, which means that the special models have many extras as standard equipment that are only available for a surcharge on the conventional Mini. There are special models, depending on the version, in almost all engine variants. The models can be recognized from the outside as special models by corresponding designations.

Since September 2005, the John Cooper Works (JCW) performance kit has also been optionally installed in the Mini Cooper S ex works. Until then, the JCW kit was only available as a retrofit accessory. In addition to the increase in performance through a modified compressor to 155 kW (211 hp), it also includes a mechanical limited-slip differential and a modified brake system. An additional flap on the air filter that opens from 4500 rpm and a modified exhaust system should make the engine noise more powerful.

From May 2006 there was the two-seater special model Mini Cooper S with JCW GP kit, limited to 2000 vehicles worldwide . It includes special rims, front and rear aprons, side skirts, a closed underbody, aluminum wishbones, Recaro sports seats and spoilers , some of which are made of carbon , as well as the Mini Cooper S engine, which has been increased to 160 kW (218 hp). This Mini is available in just one equipment variant: body in “thunder blue metallic”, roof in “pure silver” and exterior mirrors in “chili red”.

In 2007, the Sidewalk special model appeared for the mini convertible.

On November 18, 2006, the second edition of the new Mini was presented to dealers. The Mini has been optimized for pedestrian protection in order to take into account the more stringent crash tests. Instead, the bonnet was a little longer and higher. In order to maintain the proportions of the Mini, an approx. 10 cm wide plastic band was inserted in front of the classically steep windshield.

Innovations

Rear view

The biggest innovations took place under the sheet metal: the petrol engines developed in cooperation with PSA Peugeot Citroën are significantly more economical in consumption. The Cooper S uses a turbocharger for this . The engine received the Engine of the year award eight times in a row (2007 to 2014) in its class. The Mini Cooper D (3.9 l / 100 km, 104 g CO ₂ / km) had a diesel engine from the PSA-DV engine .

The equipment list has been expanded. For the first time, variable Ambilight interior lighting is offered, with which elements such as the doors are discreetly illuminated with colored, indirect light. In the interior, the buyer can choose between nine fabric, fabric / leather and leather appointments. Furthermore, the car can be clad with five different interior surfaces. Air conditioning and safety equipment ( ASC + T or DSC 3 ) are not standard, but are included in two different equipment packages. Four mini models (One Minimalist 55 kW / One Minimalist 72 kW / One D / Cooper D) will be equipped with BMW EfficientDynamics under the brand-specific name MINIMALISM from model year 2008 . This includes an automatic start-stop system (in conjunction with a manual transmission), a gearshift point indicator, brake energy recovery, aluminum components, lightweight chassis and a new underbody (reduces air resistance, increases contact pressure). Mini Clubman (R55)

In September 2007 the Mini Clubman was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt. The model is based on the Mini Traveler study presented at the IAA 2005 . The "Clubman" is 24 cm longer than the basic model and has an 8 cm longer wheelbase. Apart from the roof shape, the Mini “Kombi” or “Shooting Brake” - “We see it more in the tradition of the Shooting Brake” - is identical to the other models up to the B-pillar .

Mini convertible (R57)

The renewed mini convertible came on the market in spring 2009. In addition to all the technical innovations of the sedans, the new edition of the open version has a technical gimmick: the "always-open timer". The coupe has been available for purchase in the UK since October 2011. Technically, the vehicle is based on the Mini Cabriolet that was already available at the time, but has only two seats and a larger trunk. Compared to the standard version of the Mini, the inclination of the windshield has been modified in the automobile and a spoiler that extends automatically at 80 km / h has been added. Mini Roadster (R59)

The Mini Roadster is the convertible version of the Mini Coupé, which was presented in early 2012. In contrast to the Mini Cabriolet, the Mini Roadster is a pure two-seater with a textile top that can be opened or closed manually as standard. A partially electric opening (manual locking / unlocking of the roof) is available as an accessory at an additional cost. Mini E

An electric version of the Mini has been tested in field trials for electric mobility in Berlin, Munich, London and the USA since 2009 . The motor and the lithium-ion battery are supplied by AC Propulsion .

The electric motor has an output of 150 kW (204 hp). The acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is 8.5 s and the top speed is electronically limited to 160 km / h. In total, the battery consists of 5088 lithium-ion cells, which are housed in 48 modules in the vehicle, some in place of the rear seats, so that there are only two seats in the vehicle. The trunk volume is also impaired by the battery modules and reduced to 60 l. The range with one battery charge is 200 to 250 km. The battery charging time is 2 hours with a special charger. With an empty weight of 1465 kg, the electric Mini is 300 kg heavier than the variants with a combustion engine.

The production version of the Mini E was presented as Mini Electric in July 2019 and production will take place in Oxford . The electric version of the Mini has been available in stores as Mini Cooper SE since March 2020 . It has 184 PS, a 32.6 kWh battery and has a range of up to 270 km.

According to the BMW press release of February 24, 2018, the drive train of the Mini E will roll off the production line in Dingolfing from 2019.

Mini E Race

The Mini E Race is a modified racing version of the standard Mini E. The following modifications have been made:

Rolls-Royce presented another special model to the global public in June 2009, the “Mini Inspired by Goodwood ”. It was a version converted by Rolls-Royce with beige leather and velor in the interior. The center console and buttons were finished in black piano lacquer, while the instrument panel had its own Rolls-Royce design. Only the steering wheel was taken over from the mini model and has its emblem. The special model was produced on the occasion of the 50th birthday of the Mini. In 2011, an edition limited to 1000 copies was launched under the name "Mini Inspired by Goodwood" at a price of 46,900 euros.

The third generation of the Mini was presented at the LA Auto Show in November 2013 .

A visible innovation is the daytime running lights which, in conjunction with the optional LED headlights, form a 4/5 ring around the low beam . A noticeable feature in the interior is a multimedia system in the place of the former central speedometer.

The swivel bearings on the front axle are made of aluminum. The rear of the car has a multi-link axle .

A five-door version (F55) has been available since October 2014. The new mini convertible (F57) came in 2016. The relatively unsuccessful models Coupé and Roadster have not yet been reissued.

At the Concorso d'Eleganza on Lake Como 2014, Mini presented the Mini Superleggera Vision concept car , a two-seater roadster with an electric motor, in collaboration with the coachbuilder Superleggera .

In 2019 the Mini Electric will be shown at the IAA ; the first series vehicles are to be delivered in spring 2020.

In 2017, 46,706 mini vehicles were newly registered in Germany. This corresponds to a share of 1.4% of all newly registered passenger cars.

Mini Challenge

Mini Challenge racing car

From 2004 to 2011 there was a separate racing series for the Mini in Germany under the name Mini Challenge . With this one-make cup , BMW primarily wanted to address racing beginners and amateur drivers as participants. Only vehicles of a model specially developed for series production were allowed to be used. Changes to the vehicles were largely prohibited. The series gained fame u. a. through the participation of Cora Schumacher ; The successor series is the Mini Trophy .

In addition to the Mini Challenge Germany, there were or are mini-challenge series in the United Kingdom, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.
