O pleasant melody ( BWV 210a) is a tribute cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach . He composed the solo cantata for soprano in Leipzig in 1729 as tribute music for Christian von Sachsen-Weißenfels and performed it two more times.
Story and words
The cantata is part of Bach's repertoire of congratulatory and homage cantatas. He composed it in Leipzig for Christian von Sachsen-Weißenfels on the occasion of his visit to the trade fair city and performed it for the first time on January 12, 1729. In 1739 he dedicated it with a slightly changed text to Joachim Friedrich von Flemming (1665–1740), the governor of Leipzig, and later to the patrons of science and art; therefore it is also called "sponsor cantata". Only the soprano part of the cantata has survived, and the original was also lost in the Second World War. Since Bach used the cantata for his completely preserved wedding cantata O holder day, desired time , it could be reconstructed from it. Bach took over all five arias, the first recitative and the beginning of the last recitative in the wedding cantata. Alexander Ferdinand Grychtolik arranged for a reconstruction of the sponsor cantata, which was published in 2008 by Edition Güntersberg .
