The local railway Vienna – Baden , also called Wiener Lokalbahn or Badner Bahn , is a local railway in the greater Vienna area . Wiener Lokalbahnen GmbH (WLB), owned by Wiener Stadtwerke , operates the local railway as both an infrastructure and a transport company .
The 25 kilometer long railway line leads from Schedifkaplatz in Vienna's 12th district, Meidling , to Baden ; there it ends on Josefsplatz. The railway is electrified and expanded to double-track throughout, except for a 2.3-kilometer single-track section in Baden . Every day 35,000 people are transported on the Badner Bahn, it is integrated into the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR).
The railway line runs in the area of the first 16 stations in Vienna, partly in a low position, on stretches of the Vienna tram (blue in the line graphic), then for about 23 kilometers on independent track (red in the line graphic), the last about 2 kilometers in the center from Baden again as an - above-ground - tram (blue in the line graphic).
business
The trains to and from Baden operate continuously up and down Vienna Opera in the center of the capital. North of the Schedifkaplatz stop, they use the Vienna tram network for a length of 4.2 kilometers , where Wiener Linien is responsible for the infrastructure. In Meidling was there until 31. March 2018 used a separate route through the Wolfganggasse branch of the Badner Bahn ; since 1. April 2018, the local train runs here on the tracks of tram line 62.
There is also a tram service between Baden Josefsplatz and Baden Leesdorf . On the rest of the route, however, the Badner Bahn is a full line ; Freight trains also run between the industrial center of Lower Austria South and the Wienersdorf junction . It is linked to the railway network of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) in the area of the Gutheil-Schoder-Gasse stop and near Traiskirchen.
Today, the Badner Bahn operates a total of 22 train stations and stops in passenger transport . There are also 16 stops in the area of the Vienna tram, with Karlsplatz only being served in the direction of Vienna Opera. The local railway is now double-tracked to the former freight station in Baden Leesdorf. The rest of the route is single-track, with the Baden Viadukt station being designed as a siding . There are two butt tracks at the Baden Josefsplatz terminus .
The route operated as a tram within Vienna is operated on sight . This also applies to the tunnel section in the course of the Unterpflaster tram route under the belt . Exceptions to this are the branches in the stations Matzleinsdorfer Platz and Kliebergasse, where there are signal systems with route safety . However, these are considered to be quite prone to failure and are therefore often out of order. The rest of the route between Schedifkaplatz and Baden is signal- secured. There are main signals, protection signals, signal imitators, shunting signals and turnout signals as well as the signal boards common in the Austrian railway network such as speed or contact line signals .
Between Wien Oper and Wiener Neudorf there is a 7-8-minute cycle during rush hour . Otherwise, the route is served every quarter of an hour, and then every half hour from around 10 p.m. The travel time over the entire route is around an hour. The symmetry time of the timetable is one and a half minutes before the full hour and thus corresponds exactly to that which is usual in Central Europe. There is only a deviation from this every half hour, as the departure times are then shifted by 15 minutes in one direction.
It is true that the local railway Vienna-Baden is not a means of transport of the ÖBB, but part of the transport company Wiener Lokalbahnen AG, since the trains run on the railway line, it is also possible to purchase tickets with a Vorteilscard discount and use the trains with them. The Einfach-Raus-Ticket is also valid on the trains of the local railway Vienna-Baden. However , it is not permitted to take bicycles with you .
A network card or 24-hour ticket for Wiener Linien is valid up to the Vösendorf-Siebenhirten station. For the onward journey to Baden Josefsplatz, you would only have to pay for the distance Siebenhirten to Josefsplatz from the ticket machine. In the opposite direction, when purchasing, the machine asks whether a supplementary VOR card for the Vienna area is required.
NightLine Vienna's night bus route 360 serves daily at night as a replacement for the non-running trains of the local railway Vienna – Baden and runs largely parallel to the local railway line.
Security systems
In the first years of operation there were no security systems, only after a technical-police examination on 10. In January 1902, locks were prescribed for all points that are driven towards the point. The first mechanical center interlocking of the type 3500 from Siemens & Halske as well as siding devices for the connecting railways were opened on 18. Commissioned May 1907 - at the same time the maximum line speed was increased to 50 km / h increased. While the entry and exit signals can be mechanically operated remotely, the points remain locally operated. However, they were included in the signal dependency with turnout bars .
Between March 2006 and May 2007 a central interlocking with remote control was set up in Wiener Neudorf . The other signal boxes are normally unmanned and are remotely controlled by Wiener Neudorf. Siemens supplied the technology for the signal box. Construction began in March 2006 and opened in May 2007. Due to the mixed operation of vehicles with long-distance and tram tires, the switches in the continuous main tracks in the railway section between Schedifkaplatz and Baden-Leesdorf Fbf are equipped with frogs with movable wing rails. In railway turnouts with fixed frogs, there is a speed limit of 20 for the passenger railcars km / h.

vehicles
The majority of the vehicle fleet consists of high-floor vehicles of the 100 series , built by SGP between 1979 and 1993 . Of these three-part, eight-axle, bi-directional articulated wagons based on the Mannheim type , a total of 26 were delivered, although two older wagons, which were put into service in 1979 and 1983, were retired in 2010 due to a lack of spare parts. With these vehicles the conductorless operation on the local railway Vienna – Baden began. The wagons are equipped with a multiple control system that allows up to three vehicles to be coupled, with only double traction in normal operation . The carriages bear the first names Adi, Alois, Andreas, Claudia, Elfride, Erich, Erika, Ernst, Franziska, Hans, Harald, Herta, Inge, Josef, Karli, Margot, Michaela, Reni, Robert, Susanne, left front and right rear Theo, Vera and Wilhelm. Another train in row 100 is unnamed.
In addition, 14 are low-floor vehicles of the 400 series (also known as T2500 and T400, derived from the type T of the Vienna subway) available, which in the years 2000, 2006, 2009 and 2010 of Bombardier were built. Compared to the Type T, the 400 series cars are a little narrower with a width of 2.50 meters, there are only two instead of three doors on each side and driver's cabs at both ends. The vehicles of the newer series are equipped with video surveillance, air conditioning and a wheelchair lift. Only one car is named Gabi.
All railcars used on the route can run under all three voltages used on the Badner Bahn. The 400 series cars are designed for a speed of 80 km / h, the 100 series for 78 km / h. The multiple control of the 100 series wagons was adapted to this after delivery of the 400 series, since then the wagons have been coupled with each other. Stepless boarding can thus be guaranteed for every train that travels the entire route. As long as the adaptation work was ongoing, the cars that had already been converted were marked with an additional number "4" in front of the car number.
There are also several vintage vehicles that can be booked for special trips.

history
The Badner Bahn was created from two parts. On the 29th. September 1886, following a pre-concession based on the concession deed of 10. March 1885, for the Locomotiv-Eisenbahn from Vienna to Wiener Neudorf the Neue Wiener Tramway-Gesellschaft opened a steam tram line from Vienna to Wiener Neudorf , which was mainly used to transport goods to the brick factories in the south of Vienna. The basis for the construction and operation of a continuation line was laid with the concession document of December 29, 1886 for the local railway (steam tramway) from Wiener Neudorf to Guntramsdorf .
The extension of the Vienna route to Guntramsdorf took place on 26. January 1895 (the originally planned opening dates, 18. August 1894 and 15. November 1894, both could not be held). - The on 22. The order picking carried out in November 1894 had the following four stops as its subject: Neudorf Mitte , the stop and intersection of the Laxenburgerbahn , Adamhof and Guntramsdorf [ near Reichsstraße ].
At the other end of the route starting from 1873 the streetcar of Baden Leesdorf was after Rauhenstein with horse traction (see § 1 RGBl 1892/159) was opened for 1882 on the basis of (even a line of Sattelbach to Heiligenkreuz considered) Ministerial Decree 9 . May 1881 preparations were made for further construction until Alland and Klausen-Leopoldsdorf were made, a project which, if realized, would have resulted in significant financial income from timber transports and which would have made Baden largely independent of the (weather-dependent) flooding operation on the Schwechat from Klausen-Leopoldsdorf .
The route to Rauhenstein was from 16. July 1894 electrically operated, with the Baden Josefsplatz – Leesdorf section being part of today's Badner Bahn. The tram in Baden is the oldest electrically operated standard gauge tram in Austria. Based, among other things, on a pre-concession to The Viennese engineer Franz Fischer had applied for it on December 31, 1887 , and the route revision ordered in February 1898 was carried out on May 22, 1895 on the basis of the concession document dated May 29 , 1895 . July 1892, for the local railway with electrical operations from Baden to Vöslau the one that was electrically operated from the beginning, at least from May 1st to May 30th. The Baden - Sooss - Vöslau tram opened in uninterrupted operation on September each year . (According to § 1 of the concession document, there was the right to build the line up to the baths in Vöslau and to build a supplementary line to the train station in Vöslau . - Both projects were never carried out. The terminal was outside the forecourt to the baths until the end of operations. ) On 30. March 1897 bought the Actiengesellschaft the Vienna Local tracks the tram Baden and took retroactive effect as of the first January 1897 the management.
On the 1st In January 1898, the local railway company took over the management of the Vienna – Wiener Neudorf and Wiener Neudorf – Guntramsdorf railway lines from the Arnoldi company . As a result, the concession negotiations for the expansion of the Guntramsdorf – Baden lines, the Baden ring line and the conversion of the Vienna – Guntramsdorf line into electrical operation were brought to a conclusion. The Baden-Vöslau company was also bought by the government in those months .
With 1. June 1898, after all the preparatory work regarding the expansion of the Guntramsdorf –Baden line had been completed, the substructure began months before the concession was granted for this section of the line.
At the beginning of November 1898, the work was quite advanced , and the handover of the new railroad for May 1899 was already foreseeable.
The extension of the Baden route from Leesdorf to Guntramsdorf was (based on the concession deed of 17. October 1898 for the local line Guntramsdorf – Leesdorf […] with a connection line to the Traiskirchen station of the k. k. privileged railway Vienna – Aspang […]) on 11. May 1899 as an electric train and already in regular operation on two tracks.
On the 30th August 1899 the ring line in Baden and on 28. In January 1900 the branch line from Wienersdorf to Traiskirchen- Aspangbahnhof opened, a project that had already found advocates on a larger scale in 1881.
At the end of 1898 there was a definite intention to also build a wing from Wiener-Neudorf to Mödling, whereby Mödling and Baden would later be directly connected to Vienna by the electric train .
The double-track expansion to Guntramsdorf was completed by 1902 - with a view to its electrification, the amendment of the concession provisions for the local railways from Vienna to Wiener-Neudorf and from Wiener-Neudorf to Guntramsdorf on 20. August 1898 had been announced. In 1900, the extension of the Vienna – Baden – Vöslau line to Wittmannsdorf was planned for the following year . This project is likely to have included Gainfarn and (when conquering the Veitinger Mountains ) Hirtenberg in its routing and was supposed to establish further connections through the Leobersdorfer Bahn and the local Wittmannsdorf – Ebenfurth railway.
Since 30. In April 1907, the entire route from Vienna Opera to Baden-Josefsplatz was operated electrically, initially with alternating current being used for the overland route . In 1945 the system was switched to direct current .
After a trial and inspection drive on 15. May 1927 was from 1. June of the same year on the route Wien Oper – Baden Josefsplatz and back, a coffee house operation is offered on 36 trains , in so-called dining cars , completely new types of railcars , each equipped with an elegant buffet box that always provides passengers with food and drinks with cooling devices and an electrically heated coffee machine that offers what is available in the coffee house itself . The interior of the coaches was luxurious for a local railway: walnut-clad walls, the most modern ceiling lights, cowhide-covered seats and, in all seats, folding tables that were supposed to invite you to take a snack (without any obligation to consume). The dining cars were run in express trains , which allowed the passengers to spend the journey time , which was now set at 60 minutes, in the most pleasant way on the rather monotonous route . The catering service was offered until 1938.
Another new feature is provided that for the set as so-called baths trains fast trains also get discounted tickets for output, at the same time also to the Wind at the tram Baden-South Railway Station - located Rauhenstein (stop St. Villa Genois ), opened in 1926 Baden thermal lido entitle and in addition, there is a guarantee that a cabin will be made available when entering the bathroom . (A year earlier, after the completion of the front pool construction of the Vöslauer Park-Thermalstrandbad, the management of the local electric railway had been requested by the municipality of Vöslau to offer combined tickets (trip and swimming ticket) at reasonable prices and for direct traffic with a view to increasing tourism in a swimming pool Vienna – Vöslau .). There was also the prospect of taking local bathing trains coming from Vienna directly to the lido; The prerequisite for this: the necessary renewal of the track substructure, to be carried out in three years.
With the publication of this project, the non-rail-bound competition to the local railway Vienna - Baden, which has been upgraded in technology and comfort, as well as the Baden - Vöslau tram was activated in a promising style: a bus line from Vienna-Karlsplatz to Badener Strandbad or Vöslauer Parkstrandbad , initially every two hours running, but with the prospect of a half-hourly interval as well as significant price reductions and from the 2nd October 1927 a late connection Vienna-Schillerplatz - Baden departing daily at 11:30 p.m.
The declining traffic caused by car competition was the first to force the cessation of tram operations on the ring line in Baden at 22. July 1928 in favor of a bus line whose evening traffic was reduced by one hour compared to the tram.
From 15. September 1931 the tram to Rauhenstein was stopped on weekdays and on 15. December 1931 the branch line to Traiskirchen. The Baden - Bad Vöslau tram was also opened on 30. Replaced by buses on September 20, 1931, but due to fierce resistance from passengers and protests by local representatives in Sooss on September 20. December 1931, in place of the bus service, put back into operation. The Baden - Bad Vöslau tram was finally discontinued on 14. February 1951.
The Maria Enzersdorf-Südstadt stop was opened on 20. Opened November 1964. This made the Maria Enzersdorf-Südstadt district and the Südstadt federal stadium , which was built during this period, easier to reach.
On the night of 31. March 2018 to 1. In April 2018, the line through the Wolfganggasse station was abandoned, since then the trains have also been using the tracks of line 62 in this section.
Others
- The Badner Bahn maintains two railway stations, these are located at the Inzersdorf and Baden Leesdorf stations. Major work and regular general inspections are carried out in the main Wiener Linien workshop .
- In front of the Wien Schöpfwerk stop there is a service track to the Tscherttegasse U6 station . Until 1995, this connection was double-track and was used by the express tram line 64, a forerunner of the southern U6, which led from the Westbahnhof to Siebenhirten .
- In Guntramsdorf , the railway runs through Feldgasse in a tram-like manner, but is considered a full-line railway under railway law. That is why there is a permanent speed limit of 25 km / h (freight trains: 10 km / h in the direction of Baden or 20 km / h in the direction of Vienna) in order to be able to react in an emergency situation in good time. Freight trains also run there on public roads. In addition, due to the operation as a full train is also a way working permits.
- The announcements were recorded in 2020 by Elisabeth Engstler .
Modernization measures
Constantly be RBL Indicators fitted to all major bus stops. They are used for dynamic passenger information and show the departure of the next trains in minutes, the terminus and the train configuration.
Selected stations are currently undergoing a complete modernization. The first stops in 2012 were the Schedifkaplatz stop and Guntramsdorf train station. There was extensive construction work at the Inzersdorf passenger station, which was closed in May 2014. To replace this, the new Inzersdorf Lokalbahn stop was opened about 200 meters south .
The new Remise in Inzersdorf could be viewed on March 21, 2018 at the open day and was put into operation on March 22, 2018,

future
A 7.5-minute cycle is planned for the entire route to Baden for 2021. Several structural measures must be implemented for this. A new depot was built in Vienna Inzersdorf, which could be viewed on March 21, 2018 at the open day and was put into operation on March 22, 2018. The infrastructure of the local railway in Baden is to be expanded by 2020 and a workshop, also in Vienna Inzersdorf, is to be built by 2021. Furthermore, changes are to be made at several level crossings. Additional vehicles are also being purchased. In October 2016, it was decided to procure 18 new class 500 multiple units with commissioning from 2021.
