The class 250 was a heavy electric locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . As part of the harmonization of the series designations with the Deutsche Bundesbahn , it was renamed the 155 series on January 1, 1992. Under this name, it was in use at Deutsche Bahn AG from 1994 to 2019 , mainly for hauling heavy freight trains on almost all electrified routes in Germany .
history
In the mid-1960s it became apparent that the E 11 and E 42 series electric locomotives, initially procured by the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) after the Second World War, no longer met the increased performance requirements of train transport in freight transport . In particular, it was complained that the freight train locomotive E 42, despite being used in double traction, sometimes had difficulties starting heavy trains in the marshalling yards , and the E 11 lacked the power to accelerate the heaviest express trains at the time to 120 km / h.
From the point of view of the DR's mechanical engineering headquarters, the new performance profile required the procurement of a six-axle locomotive, which had actually already been planned in parallel to the E 11 and E 42, but was not taken into account in the procurement for capacity reasons. The Co'Co ' locomotive with the working title E 51 should be able to transport any passenger or freight train and thus be universally applicable. This goal was achieved in 1974 with the prototypes 250 001 to 250 003. As with all electric locomotives, the manufacturer was the DR Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke Hans Beimler Hennigsdorf . The latest state of the art was taken into account, such as the lightweight steel construction, which led to a corrugated locomotive body or the low linkage of the bogies . The latest ergonomic findings were taken into account when equipping the driver's cab .
Series production began after all test runs were completed in 1977. By 1984 a total of 270 series locomotives had been delivered to the DR. The machines of the 250 series hauled every type of train in goods and passenger traffic at the DR , with the focus on heavy goods train traffic .
In the years of the fall of the Wall , the locomotives were for the most part no longer needed due to the shift in the volume of goods to road transport . Therefore some were temporarily rented to the Swiss Southeast Railway (SOB), but a large part went to the German Federal Railway and was used by the depots in Nuremberg West and Mannheim under the new DB class designation 155.
Practically nothing had changed in the areas of operation, except that the machines were concentrated on the Seddin and Mannheim Rbf depots . After the third stage of the rail reform, they were added to the DB Cargo division , which effectively ended the use of passenger transport.
The locomotives were used in the entire rail network of the DB and were to be found practically in front of every type of freight train. The locomotives were primarily used in heavy mining and chemical traffic and also in front of fast container trains.
At the turn of the millennium there were repeated problems with the locomotive bogies , so that the maximum speed had to be reduced to 80 km / h at times. It began to be withdrawn because of damage that was difficult to repair and to obtain spare parts .
Since the summer of 2006, however, due to a lack of locomotives, machines of the 155 series have been subjected to a general inspection at the Dessau repair shop and the entire series has not been shut down. The first (and only surviving) prototype , the 155 001, was withdrawn from the official Railion inventory on April 3, 2006 and is preserved in the DB Museum Halle (Saale) as a rollable museum exhibit. In April 2016, 63 locomotives were still in the DB's inventory. The service of the BR 155 at DB Cargo ended on December 17, 2019 . Most of the remaining machines were parked and distributed to the Mukran standstill (mainly DB machines, occasionally also Railpool), Rostock Seaport (only Railpool locomotives) and Leipzig Engelsdorf (only Railpool locomotives).
construction
The locomotives have two three-axle bogies in which the wheel sets are arranged asymmetrically. The middle wheel set can be shifted sideways by 60 mm for reasons of archability. Each axis is driven by a twelve-pole, single-phase series motor. The power is transmitted via a spur gear arranged on both sides and the proven conical ring spring drive . Running tests by the DR had shown that the machines could run at speeds of up to 160 km / h with a modified conical ring spring drive. However, there was no need for such a locomotive, as the DR could not drive more than 120 km / h. After the reunification, corresponding plans were dropped in favor of other series, which are structurally not intended for freight traffic.
The structure is box-shaped in the literal sense of the word and gave the locomotive its various nicknames - initially " Kommissbrot ", today it is often referred to as "Kraft-" or "high-performance container". Three roof parts can be removed for better access to the large equipment in the engine room. The corrugated side walls each have a continuous fan band for supplying cooling air.
The core of the electrical part of the locomotive is the three-legged transformer with forced oil circulation and 31 taps for the switching mechanism. The thyristor-regulated high-voltage switchgear LNSW 12 with phase- angle control, which has been tested in the Rübeland locomotive E 211 001 in previous years , is used . This was also used in the 143 series. It is designed as a rotary selector with even and uneven full steps on two circular contact paths with a mechanically connected thyristor controller. As is common with older locomotives, the last three speed steps serve as a reserve when the contact wire voltage is low and must not be used during normal operation. This condition occurred quite often in the DR network.
A thyristor-controlled electrical resistance brake, which is dependent on the voltage of the contact wire , is also available. The roof equipment includes the two pantographs of the type "VM 28-31", the main switch, which is designed as a compressed air high-speed switch, roof separator and high voltage converter (for electronic monitoring of the contact wire voltage), as well as the fan grille of the braking resistor tower. During modernization work, locomotives were also equipped with new vacuum main switches and single-arm pantographs, type "DSA 200". In addition, two reserve air tanks, which u. a. supply the indirect multi-release compressed air brake , arranged on the roof. In normal operation, the compressed air brake is coupled to the electromotive brake .
The travel control works as a follow-up control with subordinate traction control (the engine driver selects a speed level, the switching mechanism starts this level automatically, traction can be adjusted), in an emergency also up / down control. The locomotives are not capable of push-pull trains or double traction . They achieve a possible starting tractive force of 6 × 80 kN (480 kN) and a continuous tractive force of 196 kN. Some locomotives have been equipped with on- board devices for linear train control LZB 80 for driving on high-speed and high-performance lines .
Whereabouts
The Mitteldeutsche Eisenbahn (MEG) has taken over twelve locomotives, these were successively upgraded with components of the 143 series , among other things, in order to be able to drive with locomotives of the 143 and 156 series in double traction. 155 locomotives that have been converted in this way can be recognized by the second IS socket on the front of the vehicle. Three locomotives have been converted in this way (155 195, MEG 704, 155 196, MEG 705 and 155 119, MEG 706).
Wedler Franz Logistik GmbH & Co. KG (WFL) has acquired the 155 110 and 155 159.
The Leipziger Eisenbahnverkehrgesellschaft (LEG) has acquired the 155 137, 155 247 and 155 078.
The Pressnitztalbahn / IntEgro owns the 155 179 (053), 155 213 (048) and 155 238 (045).
In 2017, Deutsche Bahn sold a total of 100 locomotives of the series to a consortium made up of Railpool and Toshiba .
In December 2019, the last 15 rented 155 from DB were transferred to standstill management.
Duration
Complete inventory of the 155 series at private railways, Railpool and DB AG. Stored locomotives and spare parts donors are also on this list (as of August 2020).
