action

The series tells the story of thirteen-year-old cheerleader Bella Dawson in Texas , whose life changes suddenly when she becomes quarterback on her school's football team. She is the only girl on the team.

After initial difficulties, she gets along better and better with the team.

characters

main characters

Bella Dawson is the new quarterback on the school team, the Bulldogs. She's struggling to combine her old cheerleader life with her new one as a football player.

Troy Dixon is the Bulldogs' previous quarterback. He initially believes that girls can't play football and tries to trick Bella off the team, but later becomes friends with her.

Newt Van Der Rohe is not a very good player and only with the Bulldogs because his father wanted it that way.

Sophie Delarosa is a cheerleader and Bella's best friend. She has nine brothers and always manages to assert herself against them.

Sawyer Huggins is a member of the Bulldogs. He lives on a ranch and knows everything to do with cowboys.

Pepper Silverstein is a cheerleader and Bella's best friend.

Minor characters

Ace McFumbles is the reporter for school television and sometimes goes on the edge of legality in search of new stories.

Coach Russell is the Bulldogs trainer. He believes in Bella's abilities and gives her the position on the team. He thinks a good player would bury his emotions so deeply before the game that they can't distract him.

Carrie Dawson is Bella's mother.

Kyle was once a friend of Bella's. When Bella hears that Kyle is moving away, she is sad.

Charlotte Newman is Bella's rival. She was with Kyle, but later she's with Troy. Bella realizes that Charlotte used Troy only to make her best friend jealous.

Charlie is Sawyer's cousin.

Zach plays for the Silverado East team. He invites Bella to homecoming, but transfers her because her team has won.

criticism

Robert Lloyd wrote for the Los Angeles Times that Bella and the Bulldogs was a well-done series. He emphasizes that this series is about gender perception, using the example of a girl being able to play football. However, she is by no means free of prejudice, as shown in Pepper's reaction (Bella could injure herself, or worse, football outfits look unfavorable). Furthermore, it was noticeable that the series was cast of mixed races, as is customary for the genre.
