Fine arts in Vorarlberg

The first efforts and initiatives for a Vorarlberg artist lexicon began in the 1970s and 1980s by Arnulf Benzer as head of the cultural department in the office of the Vorarlberg state government. As director of the Vorarlberg State Museum in 1976, Helmut Swozilek published the catalog for the visual arts exhibition in Vorarlberg 1900–1950 , which was subsequently used as a reference work and lexicon. This was followed in 1986 by Wolfgang Fetz Kunst's dissertation in Vorarlberg. Vorarlberg artist 1945–1985at the University of Innsbruck. Further stations were exhibition catalogs on art purchases in the state of Vorarlberg with I, II, III / 1984 and IV, V / 1992. An initiative at the beginning of the 1990s with Helmut Swozilek, Wilhelm Meusburger from the Vorarlberg State Library and President of Vorarlberg's Visual Artists, Rudolf Sagmeister and Herbert Abrell from the Kunsthaus Bregenz , did not lead to the definitive commission of the Vorarlberg State Government's cultural advisor Hans-Peter Bischof until 2004 . Before that, a catalog was published in 2003 for an exhibition in the Künstlerhaus Bregenz by curator Susanne Fink on art and construction in Vorarlberg since 1945 . The task was to record all artists who have worked in Vorarlberg over the past 60 years, including those who have only spent parts of their lives here, but who have done essential work here. The prerequisite for inclusion in the lexicon was the consent of the 505 artists, which was only refused in a few cases.
