About this picture

Betzweiler is a municipality in the district of Biberach in Baden-Württemberg ( Germany ).

Geographical location

Betzenweiler is located in Upper Swabia .

In the north of Betzenweiler rises the “Holy Mountain of Upper Swabia” - the buses. To the south lies the Federsee , with its Unesco world cultural heritage.

history

Betzenweiler was probably first mentioned as early as 817, when it came into the possession of the St. Gallen monastery as the "Perahtramnilvillare" . However, there was no documentary mention of Betzenweiler until 1275. Through various monastic and aristocratic local lords over the centuries, the place came to the Buchau monastery in 1510 ..

When the monastery was dissolved around 1803, Betzenweiler fell to the Princes of Thurn and Taxis , who incorporated it into the Imperial Principality of Buchau . With the mediatization of this principality, the place fell to the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1806 and was assigned to the Oberamt Riedlingen there .

The district reform in 1938 led to the affiliation to the Saulgau district , with its dissolution in 1973 Betzenweiler came to the Biberach district . Through the establishment of the administrative association Federsee in 1978, to which Betzenweiler belongs, the independence of the community could be maintained until today.

In the course of the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) almost the entire population of Betzenweiler was destroyed by the effects of war and the plague. The new settlement took place at the initiative of a Father von Stein by immigrants from Switzerland , mainly from the Inwil area . This is also the reason why the residents of Betzenweiler are still known as "Stone Swiss" in the surrounding area.

There are various theories about the naming of Betzenweiler. The most likely one is due to the early Celtic history of the place. In the area of the Kanzacher Berg there is a former Keltenschanze that is now only sparsely recognizable . According to legend, this is said to have been aimed at the red giant Betelgeuse . Nothing is historically guaranteed, but a certain similarity of names can at least be derived.

Culture, sights and facilities

Culture and customs

Like the entire Swabian Oberland , Betzenweiler is strongly influenced by Catholic culture and religion . The course of the year in public life is shaped accordingly.

In Betzenweiler there is also a strong club landscape, which keeps culture and customs very much alive. The most traditional associations include the "Association of Citizens' Sons 1804 eV" and the "Association to Commemorate the Victims of War and Violence - Soldier Comradeship Betzenweiler 1870."

The supra-regional customs of the carnival is held high by the Narrenzunft Stoischweizer.

St. Clemens Betzenweiler

The sports club, the Catholic rural youth and the music club are among the groups with the largest number of members. Particularly noteworthy are the diverse and very active choirs in community life. In Upper Swabia it is still widespread today that "to make a pilgrimage to Bischmanshausen seven times corresponds to one time in Switzerland to Einsiedeln."
