Blood on the Dance Floor - HIStory in the Mix is a remix album by Michael Jackson released in May 1997 , with five previously unknown tracks. The album sold around eight million times worldwide. It is considered to be the most successful remix album of all time. The album was dedicated to his longtime friend and also inspirer Elton John .

review

The title song " Blood on the Dance Floor " became a hit worldwide and reached number one on the singles charts in Great Britain, for example.

The songs "Blood on the Dance Floor" and "Superfly Sister" had already been produced for the album Dangerous (1991), but were not released on it.

"Morphine" is an outtake of the album HIStory (1995).

The title " Ghosts " was heard for the first time in 1996 at the world premiere of the short film Ghosts in US cinemas and has similar, in some cases identical, song texts to the title " Is It Scary ".

“Is It Scary” - the title was already in discussion in 1993 - should appear on the HIStory album, but that didn't happen either. There are several official remixes of "Is It Scary", some of which should appear on the planned single "Smile" in late 1997. This publication was canceled at the last moment, but there are still a few specimens that are highly regarded among collectors. Other remixes of "Is It Scary" appeared on two rather rare English 12 "promos.

In 1997, abstracts of the songs "Ghosts" and "Is It Scary" were subsequently mixed into the revised version of the short film Ghosts . In addition, the song "Ghosts" runs in a slightly different version than on the album in the "Making Of" credits of the film.

The song "Morphine" is about drug addiction. This topic can be traced back to the Dangerous World Tour . During the tour, allegations of child molestation emerged, which led Jackson to suffer from depression and pain. He became addicted to pain medication and had to go on rehab. Particularly noteworthy about this song is the mixture of rock and funk as well as the use of new music which suddenly occurs unpredictably from the middle of the piece. Michael Jackson single-handedly wrote and produced the song. He also played instruments such as guitar and drums himself.

When it comes to the selection of remixes, two are particularly noteworthy, as they can only be found on this release: "Money - Fire Island Radio Edit" and "2 Bad - Refugee Camp Mix".

Jackson himself was not a fan of his own remixes, as he had an aversion to changing his songs in such a way that they hardly have anything to do with the basic composition. According to him, he only tolerated them at the request of his record label on the grounds that remixes were popular with the kids.

Trivia

  • At the same time as the single "Blood On The Dance Floor" remixes of the song "Dangerous" were released. These should actually have come onto the market in 1993 with the planned "Dangerous" single, but were then crushed because they had finally decided on "Gone Too Soon" instead of "Dangerous" as the single. It was not until 1997 that the decision was made to publish the "Dangerous" remixes after all and in this way.
  • Various recordings not used for the regular “Blood On The Dance Floor” video clip (only released commercially in 2003 on the “Number Ones” DVD compilation) were used for the “Refugee Camp Mix” remix clip of the song. This clip, which deviates considerably from the original, was released in 1997 and 1998 (DVD) on the "HIStory on Film Vol. 2" video cassette or DVD.
  • There was initially no separate video clip for the title "Ghosts". In the short film of the same name, Ghosts , the song "2 Bad" and not "Ghosts" is in the foreground. The songs “Ghosts” and “Is It Scary” were not mixed into the film until 1997, with the first music / dance sequence “2 Bad” remaining unchanged. A montage of different sequences from the entire Ghosts film then served as a video clip for the song "Ghosts". This clip was not initially released on any Jackson videotape or DVD. After Jackson's death, it appeared on the Michael Jackson's Vision DVD set , a collection of Jackson's videos and short films.
