The Bochum district of Grumme belongs to a large extent to the Mitte district and connects to the city center to the north .

In 1150 Grumme was mentioned as Grumheim for the first time in a document, the so-called Urbare, of the Abbey of Werden. During this time there were around 10 farms among the Grumme farmers. In the centuries that followed, the number of farms and the number of residents did not change significantly. Around 1850 Grumme had about 250 inhabitants. In the course of industrialization, the population rose rapidly.

In 1880 a Catholic elementary school, initially two-class with a total of 212 children, was built.

In 1891 the Catholic Church of St. Liborius was consecrated,

In 1901 a Protestant school followed,

From 1903 the mine became Constantin . sunk with shafts VI and VII on the ridge of the Kötterberg above Grumme. Today the Hiltroper Strasse sports facility is located there.

On April 1, 1904, the small towns around Bochum were incorporated, including Grumme.

In 1914 construction began on the Protestant youth home, which was also used as a community center.

The district is cut up by the A 40 running through Grumme , the so-called Ruhrschnellweg. This fact was somewhat mitigated in the Heckertstrasse area by a cover that was subsequently placed on the motorway. It not only serves to protect the surrounding settlements from noise, a park with play opportunities has been set up on the expressway. The Grummer lid was inaugurated in 1989.

At the Bochum-Stadion exit, in addition to the Ruhrstadion , the venue of VfL Bochum , there is also the RuhrCongress Bochum event hall , various hotels, the Starlight Express Theater , in which the Starlight Express musical is shown, and the St. Josef Hospital , one of the four large hospitals in Bochum.

Once a year the folk festival takes place at the Grummer ponds . The ponds were artificially created between 1950 and 1970 as a recreational area. In this part of Grumme, especially in the area of the old Goeke restaurant (Josephinenstrasse 65) or on Kötterberg, Grumme looks more like a small town in the country than part of a metropolitan region.
