Candystorm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Candystorm [ ˈkændɪˈstɔː (r) m ] is a composition of the English terms candy ('sweetness, bonbon') and storm ('storm') and, as an antonym to Shitstorm in German-speaking countries, describes a wave of popularity in social media . The term was first used on November 12, 2012 by Volker Beck ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) on the short message service Twitter , who described a support movement for the then party chairman Claudia Roth .

history

In November 2012, the members of the party chose Alliance 90 / The Greens means of a primary election their top candidate inside for the general election in 2013. Claudia Roth, at this time the incumbent party leader, finished with a vote share of 26.2 percent, only fourth. The result, which was disappointing for them, gave rise to speculation about their withdrawal from the party leadership, whose new election was imminent. Claudia Roth's sympathizers then reported on the short message service Twitter with encouragement and recognition and the Green politician Volker Beck used the term on November 11, 2012 with his appeal for “Candystorm for Claudia” on Twitter, for the first time in the public German-speaking area Candystorm as a name for this advocacy movement and as a description for the "opposite of a shitstorm". On November 12, 2012, Roth announced that she would run for re-election as party leader. At the federal delegates' conference on November 17, 2012, alluding to the Candystorm , she was thrown candy by the delegates at the end of her application speech and confirmed in office in the subsequent election with a result of 88.5 percent of the votes. Roth said: "I was particularly touched because I hadn't known that before, a Candystorm in which I was asked to run for office directly."

Numerous German-language media report on the conceptually revised internet phenomenon , for which terms such as Flausch , Flauschstorm and Lovestorm had already been used in advance in German-language internet jargon . The term established itself in the media science discussion.

distribution

Within a short time, the term developed into a neologism and was also used outside of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party congress and without reference to the sympathy rallies for Claudia Roth. Die Zeit noticed that the "cuddling attack", which "despite his botched start as a candidate for Chancellor " "at the Juso Congress in Magdeburg" in November 2012 " acted on the candidate" Peer Steinbrück ( SPD ) for half an hour , from the meeting " Candystorm “was called. The Donaukurier titled its report on Marlene Mortler ( CSU ), who was elected candidate for the 2013 federal election with 99.3 percent of the delegate votes of the CSU district associations Roth and Nürnberger Land , with "99 percent plus an attack in the Candystorm" Die Neue Zürcher In the course of the sexism debate triggered by an article in Stern magazine, the newspaper reported that the FDP " prepared a New Years reception for its much-scolded member" Rainer Brüderle "at the weekend in Düsseldorf, which grew into a real candy storm". In the same context, the online industry service Meedia reported a "story between Shit and Candystorm", the WDR spoke of a "Liberal Candystorm for the top man". The gay - lesbian news portal queer.de remarked to the member of the Bundestag Michael Kauch , who failed in the preliminary nomination of the FDP-Ruhr for the Bundestag candidates of the NRW state list , that he was now hoping for "a candy storm".

The term Candystorm was also used in the German-language press outside of politics. Die Welt titled its article on the discontinuation of the publication of the business newspaper Financial Times Deutschland with “'Financial Times Deutschland' in Candystorm”, Die Welt Kompakt with “'Financial Times Deutschland': Candy-Storm for parting”. The Handelsblatt spoke on November 21 of a "'Lovestorm' for the Financial Times Deutschland".

According to the WAZ media group , supporters of the controversial museum director Raimund Stecker , who was criticized for the impending insolvency of the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg , organized defective small electrical appliances in December 2012 under the motto "It doesn't work without a plug" the museum the construction of a “barrier of sympathy”, “as a huge sympathy rally”, as a “candy storm”.

The magazine Stern adapted the term Candystorm in relation to the sweets distributed to all children in the country under the age of ten on the occasion of the birthday of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on January 8, 2013, one kilogram per child. The magazine commented: “The state news agency claims to have registered 'explosions of joy' after the delicacies were brought to the people by helicopter and plane. For parts of the population, the 'Candystorm' should be the first real calorie boost in a long time. "

The Austrian business daily Medianet reported in February 2013 on the “outbreak” of the “probably largest Facebook candystorm” so far with around 41,000 participants “on the German-speaking Internet”, a “wave of solidarity” for the Walter Niemetz confectionery factory in the Facebook group, which had run into financial difficulties "Save the Niemetz Swedish bombs ". The Austrian cult ice cream of the 1990s Tschisi was produced again by the Unilever subsidiary Eskimo after a Candystorm and a lot of media attention. The company minimized its own risk as much as possible by cleverly participating in the discussion on the Facebook page “We want the Tschisi ice cream back” and waiting for a critical mass of around 90,000 fans.

After reports of two incidents in March 2013 in which Autonome threw white jam jars on Til Schweiger's house and his girlfriend's car burned down, the actor's Facebook page received a flood of supportive comments, referred to in media reports as Candystorm . The wave of sympathy increased even more after the newspaper “ Bild ” reported on its cover of March 27 about the “Facebook consolation for Til Schweiger!”.

Supporters of whistleblower Edward Snowden entered a petition on June 9, 2013 through the White House website entitled "Pardon Edward Snowden." A petition must find more than 100,000 supporters in 30 days for the White House to respond. The required hurdle was passed in June. The newspaper "Bild" reported with the headline: " Candystorm for Edward Snowden ". The “Twitter candystorm for Snowden Asylum”, which appeared in July 2013, referred to Section 22 of the Residence Act under the hashtag snowstorm22 , on the basis of which, according to the participants, Snowden could be granted asylum in Germany.

On November 12, 2012, Die Zeit commented under the heading Prominent Ignored : “It is conceivable that in the distant future no one will know that Claudia Roth was green. But that she was cute and invented the "candy storm" will go down in history. "

Thomas Oppermann , Parliamentary Managing Director of the SPD parliamentary group, said on November 13, 2012 on Twitter: "@Volker_Beck has made Twitter history: #candystorm is a word creation that lasts."

Axel Hoffmann, Deputy Chairman of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation , which is closely related to the FDP, even sees the phenomenon as paradigmatic for the digital society: “The end of a liberal civil society is in sight. The shit or candy storm rules. "

Holger Schmale from the Frankfurter Rundschau criticized: “Now everyone can express themselves as they like. What is fatal, however, is that this infantile form of communication, which has become a mass phenomenon via Facebook, has an effect on politics, which are always receptive to mass trends. Who should take a politician and her concerns seriously who, like Claudia Roth, justifies the continuation of her political career as Greens leader with a candystorm, i.e. a wave of exuberant, positive, caressing letters on the Internet? And whose followers translate this virtual affection into reality and, after their re-election, shower them with candy like on a children's birthday party? "

Inge Kutter commented in Die Zeit on a study by the Australian Swimming Association that highlighted the effect of social media on competitive athletes: “But a discomfort remains. The study makes it clear that direct public attention on virtual channels can have noticeable side effects. It is similar to that of television fame, but is reinforced by the fact that there is no longer a filter between a star and his audience. Every reaction is immediate and direct. And those hit are alone, in Shitstorm as in Candystorm. "
