Boxing career

Saúl Álvarez started boxing at the age of 13 and has played 20 amateur fights. His greatest success as an amateur was winning the 2005 Mexican Junior Championships.

He started his professional career on October 29, 2005 with a knockout victory against Abraham González. In his third fight, he defeated the later IBF World Champion Miguel Vázquez on points and was also able to win the rematch on June 28, 2008 on points. In his fifth fight on June 17, 2006, he boxed his first draw against Jorge Juárez from Tijuana .

On September 29, 2006 he defeated the Hispano champion of the WBC Francisco Villanueva by knockout in round 5 and on August 18, 2007 the eventual Mexican champion Cristian Solano by unanimous points victory. On April 18, 2008, he secured the Fedecentro title of the WBA by dropping out of the referee in the 12th round against the previously undefeated Gabriel Martínez (17-0), who was taken out of the fight due to injury. He then defended his title against the former WBO Latino champion Carlos Jerez (27-9) and against the former Colombian champion Raul Pinzon (16-1).

On January 17, 2009 he won the NABF North American Championship by knockout in round 1 against the WBC Junior World Champion, Antonio Fitch (12-1). Then he won on February 21, 2009, in addition, the Latino title of the WBO by knockout in round 11 against the unbeaten Euri Gonzalez (17-0). He then defended his NABF title with a knockout against Michel Rosales (23-2) and Jefferson Gonçalo (19-3).

On August 8, 2009 he was the new WBC junior world champion welterweight; he defeated the Russian Marat Chuseew (18-4) by knockout in round 2. On September 15, 2009 he defended the title by knockout in round 1 against the Argentine Carlos Herrera (21-1). He also defended the NABF title against future US champions Lanardo Tyner (21-2) and Brian Camechis (19-2).

In a non-title fight on May 1, 2010 in Las Vegas , he defeated the former WBC junior world champion and later, two-time WBA World Championship challenger José Miguel Cotto (31-1) by knockout in round 9 and thus added the first premature Defeat his career too. On July 10, 2010 he won by knockout in round 6 against Luciano Cuello (26-1), the silver title of the WBC and defended it against ex-WBC world champion Carlos Baldomir (45-12), as well as against ex-IBF World champion Lovemore N'dou (48-11).

On March 5, 2011 he won the WBC world title by unanimously winning points against European champion Matthew Hatton (41-4). His first title defense was against European champion Ryan Rhodes (45-4) on June 18 of the same year and won by knockout in round 12.

On September 17, 2011 he defended his title in Los Angeles with a technical knockout in round 6 against Alfonso Gómez (23-4). On November 26th he defeated the ex-world champion Kermit Cintrón (33-4) by technical knockout in round 5. On May 5th, 2012 in Las Vegas he defeated the former WBA, WBC and IBF world champion Shane Mosley ( 46-7) unanimously on points. On September 15, 2012 he boxed in another title defense in Las Vegas against Josesito López (30-4). Álvarez had his opponent down in rounds 2, 3 and 4 and won in the fifth round by technical knockout.

On April 20, 2013, he combined his WBC World Championship belt with the World Championship belt of the WBA, after he won a unanimous points victory against Austin Trout (26-0) in San Antonio . He also had the American on the ground in the seventh round.

On September 14, 2013, the fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. , which was awaited with great interest in the boxing world , took place over the full distance of 12 rounds; the more experienced Mayweather had clearly dominated Álvarez, so that after the end of the fight there were actually no doubts about a clear point victory Mayweather. However, only two of the three referees saw it that way - the referee CJ Ross had surprisingly rated the fight as a draw, for which she had to accept severe criticism and resigned as a referee a few days after the fight. Álvarez lost both of his titles in this fight.

In March 2014, Álvarez won early against Alfredo Angulo (22-3). In July of the same year he defeated Erislandy Lara (19-1) over twelve rounds on points. In May 2015 there was a knockout win in the third round against James Kirkland (32-1).

On November 21, 2015, he won the WBC middleweight title by a unanimous victory on points against Miguel Cotto (40-4). In May 2016 he defeated Amir Khan (31-3) by knockout in the sixth round. On May 18, 2016, Álvarez resigned his WBC world title, whereby the WBC immediately awarded the Kazak Gennady Golovkin the world title.

On September 17, 2016, he defeated Liam Smith (23-0) in the fight for the WBO light middleweight title by knockout.

Alvarez defeated Julio César Chávez junior on May 6, 2017 in Las Vegas in a prestige battle dominating on points over twelve rounds.

On September 16, 2017, he boxed for the IBF and WBA middleweight championship titles against Gennady Golowkin (37-0), who also held the IBO and WBC titles. In the fast-paced fight Álvarez scored a draw, which Golowkin as a professional did not emerge as the winner of a fight for the first time. Judge Adalaide Byrd had rated the duel with 118: 110 for Álvarez, Dave Moretti with 115: 113 for Golowkin. The third judge Don Trella scored 114: 114. For many boxing experts, however, this was a misconception. They clearly saw Golovkin in front who was the more active boxer and landed more punches. Especially Byrd's judgment with 118: 110 caused incomprehension. She was then banned from future title fights.

The rematch against Golovkin should take place on May 5, 2018. The fight was canceled because Álvarez was tested positive for Clenbuterol in two doping controls during preparation . He was banned for six months.

The rematch against Gennadi Golowkin then took place on September 15, 2018 in Las Vegas, with Álvarez being able to prevail on points and winning the IBO, WBA and WBC world titles. The fight was fought on the highest level by both sides, with Alvarez dominating the first half of the fight and shaping the fight from the middle of the ring. In the second half Golowkin got stronger and stronger and pushed Alvarez more and more on the defensive. Two judges rated the fight 115: 113, 115: 113 for Alvarez and one 114: 114 as a tie

On December 15, 2018, he defeated Rocky Fielding (27-1) early in the third round. In May 2019, he won on points against Daniel Jacobs . On November 2, 2019, he won the WBO world light heavyweight title with an early win against Sergei Kowaljow (34-3). In 2019, Álvarez was named Boxer of the Year by The Ring magazine .
