He defeated Hao Yen Kuo from Taiwan (demolition), Alexander Renz from Germany (26: 7), Benjamin Kalinovic from Sweden (21:10), Jewgeni Putilow from Russia (24:10) and Maikel Pérez from Cuba (30: 17). Six months later he won the East Asian Games in Japan with victories against the South Korean Soo-Young Kim (demolition), the Chinese Chi-Wan Song (demolition) and the Australian Daniel Geale (15: 3).

At the World Championships in Thailand in 2003 he was finally able to establish himself at the top of the world; He defeated two-time world champion Matwei Korobow (19:10) in the preliminary round, vice-junior world champion Andy Lee (29: 9) in the round of 16 , in the quarter-finals the winner of the Francophone games Lucian Bute (knockout), in the semi-finals the two-time bronze medalist at world championships Yordanis Despaigne (29:26) and in the final the European champion Oleg Maschkin (demolition).

Professional career (since 2006)
Gennadi Golowkin began his professional career in 2006 at Spotlight Boxing , a sister company of Universum Box-Promotion . He was initially trained by Magomed Schaburow . He completed his first professional fight on May 6, 2006 against Gabor Balogh and won by knockout in the first round. In his third fight he beat the later IBF junior world champion in the light middleweight division, Daniel Urbanski (5-1), with a technical knockout in the fourth round. This was followed by thirteen more wins, ten of them by knockout, against well-known regional opponents such as Javier Mamaní (35-7) or Malik Dziarra (29-3).
On July 11, 2009 Golowkin won the WBO Intercontinental Championship by knockout in the second round against John Carvalho (19-3). On November 21, Gennady Golovkin completed his last fight for Spotlight Boxing, canceled his contract in January 2010 and went into business for himself. With his new GGG management, Golowkin got the status of mandatory challenger at the WBA and was allowed to box for the transitional world championship of the WBA for the first time in his professional career. He won this on August 14, 2010 by knockout in round 1 against Milton Núñez (21-1). Former WBA world champion Felix Sturm was named "Superchampion" by the WBA for his successes, and Gennadi Golowkin got the opportunity to box for the regular WBA title. He won this in December 2010 in Astana, Kazakhstan by knockout in the third round against Nilson Tapia (14-2). It was the first fight in his professional career that he fought in his home country.
In the summer of 2011, Golowkin finally separated from his former promoter Universum Box-Promotion , who had tried to bring him to court to continue boxing for this promotion. An agreement was reached before the Hamburg Higher Regional Court and thus Golowkin was a free boxer and was able to plan and shape his career himself. At the end of 2011, Golowkin signed a promotional contract with Tom Loeffler from the USA, who works for K2 Promotions , which was founded by the Klitschko brothers in the USA.
After defending his title early against Kassim Ouma (27-7), Golowkin fought for the vacant IBO title on December 9, 2011 with a superior first-round knockout against Lajuan Simon (23-3) from the USA. He defended both world championship titles with an early victory on May 12, 2012 against the Japanese Makoto Fuchigami (19-6) in Kiev (Ukraine).
On September 1, 2012, Gennadi Golowkin celebrated his US debut in Verona, NY, USA with an early win against Poland's Grzegorz Proksa (28-1). That was Golovkin's first fight, broadcast on HBO . After the reigning super world champion Daniel Geale was stripped of the title, Golowkin was the sole world champion of the WBA since November 1, 2012.
On January 19, 2013, the second fight on HBO followed in the famous Madison Square Garden of New York City . In this fight Golowkin won against Gabriel Rosado (21-5) from Philadelphia in the seventh round by tKo after Rosado's corner had thrown in the towel. After a knockout win against Nobuhiro Ishida (24-8), he defended both championship belts with a knockout in the third round against Matthew Macklin (29-4).
On November 2, 2013 Golowkin defeated Curtis Stevens (25-3) by tKo in the eighth round and on February 1, 2014 also Osumanu Adama (22-3) prematurely in round 7. On July 26, 2014, he defeated Daniel Geale (30 -2) early in the third round. In October 2014 he defeated the Mexican Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6) by knockout in the second round.
Just a few days after this victory it was announced that Martin Murray (29-1) would be the next opponent on February 21, 2015. Golowkin, who was trained by Abel Sanchez , defeated Murray by knockout in the eleventh round. With the 19th knockout in a row and the associated 13th defense of his title, Gennadi climbed to third place among the most successful boxers of all time in the middleweight division.
On May 16, 2015, he defeated Willie Monroe junior (19-1) in California early in the sixth round. With the 20th knockout in a row, Gennadi's knockout quota rose to 90.9% (33 fights / victories - 30 by knockout).
Shortly after the announcement of Golowkin's next fight against Canadian David Lemieux (34-2), which took place on October 17th in Madison Square Garden and won the Golowkin by TKo in the eighth round, another record was broken. In advance ticket sales, over 6000 tickets were sold within the first two days, something that no boxing event in the MSG has achieved to date. In addition, this title unification fight (Lemieux held the IBF middleweight title ) was Gennadi's first pay-per-view event ( HBO PPV ).
The following fight of Golovkin was for 23 April 2016 Forum, Los Angeles, CA against the No. 2 mandatory challenger of IBF , Dominic Wade announced (18-0). Both Saúl Álvarez (reigning WBC middleweight champion) and Billy Joe Saunders (reigning WBO world middleweight champion) had not agreed to a title unification fight, No. 1 public defender Tureano Johnson is injured. After a total of 3 knockdowns, the fight was over in the 2nd round. Gennadi remained undefeated by the 22nd knockout win in a row.
On May 18, 2016, Canelo announced that it would be resigning from the WBC middleweight title . Thus Gennadi automatically became a full champion of the WBC (to date, interim champion of the WBC in the middleweight division).
On September 10, 2016, he defeated in The O 2 , London, Greenwich also unbeaten Kell Brook (36-0) by TKo in the fifth round (who had risen from the two weight classes lower welterweight for this fight ). With his 23rd knockout victory, his knockout rate rose to 92%.
In 2015 and 2016, Gennadi sold out three different arenas on two continents (North America, Europe) in three consecutive fights. In Los Angeles it was "The Forum" with 16,353 viewers. In New York in the "Madison Square Garden" against David Lemieux there were over 20,000 visitors and in London (in the "O2 Arena") against Kell Brook there were about 20,000 tickets.
On March 18, 2017, Golowkin played an unification match with WBA title holder Daniel Jacobs (32-1) in Madison Square Garden . Golowkin won the fight on points with 114: 113, 115: 112 and 115: 112, but Jacobs was able to make the fight evenly balanced and interrupted Golowkin's knockout winning streak of 23 early victories in a row. In the end, however, outweighed the numbers of the stroke statistics (231 hits out of 615 hits, 37.6%) from Golowkin and the precipitation in the 4th round, so that Golowkin successfully defended his title for the 18th time.
On May 6, 2017, Golowkin stepped into the ring immediately after Canelo (49-1-1) beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and congratulated the winner. A fight between Canelo and Golowkin was announced, and in the following press conference September 16, 2017 was named as the planned date. After twelve rounds a draw was announced after a point judgment, both boxers stated that they would like a rematch.
By knocking out Vanes Martirosyan (36-3-1) in the 2nd round on May 5, 2018 , Gennadi set the all-time record for defending Bernard Hopkins' middleweight title .
After lengthy negotiations, the IBF announced on June 6, 2018 that the IBF middleweight world champion belt is vacant with immediate effect, as the fight between Gennady and the mandatory challenger Serhiy Derevianchenko (12-0) did not take place.
On September 15, 2018, Golowkin lost the rematch against Saúl Álvarez (49-1-2) on points and suffered his first defeat as a professional.
After HBO announced in September 2018 that it would be leaving boxing after 45 years at the end of 2018, there was long speculation about where its fights might be seen in the future. After several conversations with Eddie Hearn ( Matchroom Boxing , DAZN ) and Bob Arum ( Top Rank , ESPN ), Golowkin finally signed a contract with the online streaming service DAZN for six fights in March 2019.
On April 24, 2019, Golowkin announced the end of his long-term collaboration with his trainer Abel Sanchez .
