Carol Anne Chenard (born February 17, 1977 ) is a Canadian football referee . She is the first female referee to whistle two finals at the Women's U-20 World Cup . At the 2016 Olympic Games , she led the final between Sweden and Germany .

Career

Chenard is the daughter of a speed skating official and practiced the sport as well as basketball, soccer and volleyball. She holds a degree in Microbiology and Immunology from McGill University and lives in Ottawa .

Referee

Chenard has been an international referee since 2006. Their first major tournament was the 2008 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Mexico. After that it was used repeatedly at CONCACAF championships, world championships and the Olympic Games. So far, she has been used in ten games of the German women's national football team , making her the record referee at games of the German women. She also directed six games of the U-20 team at World Cup tournaments. In 2010 and 2014 she headed the finals of the U-20 women's soccer World Cup . Germany and Nigeria faced each other. On March 30, 2015, she was selected as one of 29 referees for the 2015 World Cup in her home country. The first game for which she was nominated as a referee was the game of ex-world champion Germany against World Cup newcomer Ivory Coast in her home town of Ottawa. On May 2, 2016, she was nominated for the 2016 Olympic football tournament, and on August 18 for the final between Sweden and Germany.

In October 2017, she was one of seven referees on the supporting team of referees at the U-17 World Cup in 2017 , which was the first time women were used in a men's World Cup.

On December 3, 2018, she was nominated for the 2019 Women's World Cup . On June 4, 2019, FIFA announced that she was unable to attend because she had breast cancer .
