history

The name of the neighborhood is derived from Salvador Sebastián Carrasco , one of the first residents of Montevideo, whose estancia was in this area. Carrasco, like the Hotel Casino Carrasco as the most important building in the district, came about from a purely private initiative. Up until then, this was the first project of its kind in Uruguay in which both the town planning and the design of an entire district were carried out exclusively by private individuals. The initiative came from a group of pioneers united in the stock corporation ( sociedad anónima ) Balneario de Carrasco . The design of the garden district, which initially served as a summer residence in its early days, came from the French Charles Thays . During the First World War , the work begun in 1912 also came to a halt with regard to the hotel, so that the city of Montevideo took over the further execution. The hotel was finally opened in 1921. The church was also completed in the same year.
