chronology

The first chapel in Kempen, probably made of wood, was built in 1134, and there was an altar in it in honor of Our Lady . The incorporation of the chapel into the Gangolfus monastery in Heinsberg is mentioned for the year 1254. Presumably it took place after the construction of a stone chapel, which was later extended by the central nave and the south aisle. The construction of the Gothic choir with a main altar in honor of Our Leven Vrauwen dates back to 1450 . At the same time a tower was built. The Katharinen Altar was donated in 1457, followed in 1559 by the foundation of a St. Nicholas altar, combined with a change in the parish patronage . During the Eighty Years War , troops from the Limburg Netherlands invaded in 1588 , which led to the cremation of the town and the church. The church was rebuilt as a three-aisled brick building surrounded by the old cemetery. The length of the church was 17 m, its width 12 m, the tower height about 25 m. In 1606 the church was raised to a parish church after it was rebuilt, and a sacristy was added in 1635.

Over the following centuries, the building fell into disrepair, so that in 1903 the dilapidated church was demolished except for the Gothic choir section, the open side of which was bricked up. In 1920 the vault collapsed due to further deterioration of the old choir . In 1930 the choir was restored and a war memorial was built, and in 1943 the outdoor facilities were prepared. The monument was destroyed in 1945 by the effects of the war. Reconstruction took place in 1957 on the occasion of the home and deanery shooting festival of the shooting society since 1507 . In 1975 the triumphal arch was opened and a glass wall and a new floor were installed, as well as the restoration of the grave vault. On January 19, 1984, the choir was added to the list of monuments of the city of Heinsberg as monument no. 37. In 2006 the choir was restored, and in 2013 a new staircase was installed at the entrance to the choir.
