Cicero (originally Hawthorne ) is a city in Cook County in the US -amerikanischen State Illinois and part of the Chicago metropolitan area . In 2000 the city had 85,616 inhabitants.

The name Cicero comes from the Roman politician Marcus Tullius Cicero .

Al Capone moved his criminal empire to Cicero in 1924 to evade the Chicago police force. In literary terms, Bertolt Brecht uses this as a parable for the connection of Austria in his play “ The Temporary Ascent of Arturo Ui ” . There was a great surge of Hispanic immigrants (mostly from Mexico and Central America ) in the 1990s .

history

Cicero is the only town in Cook County. It emerged from the township formed in 1849 . Cicero included the area between Harlem Avenue and Western Avenue and Pershing Road and North Avenue; however, a large part of this area was annexed by the city of Chicago by 1889. In 1899, after a referendum, Austin became one of the most populous city in Illinois. When the writer Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park on July 21, 1899 , this was still part of Cicero. In 1901, the residents of Oak Park, Berwyn and Cicero voted for self-employment. Today's town of Cicero covers less than a sixth of the area of ​​the township established in 1849.

Named after the town's original name, the Hawthorne Works of the Western Electric Company was located here . The Hawthorne effect is named after the studies carried out here . The factory opened in 1905, employed 45,000 workers at peak times; it was closed in 1983 and later converted into a shopping mall.

National Register of Historic Places

The Chodl Auditorium of J. Sterling Morton High School, built in 1925 in the Beaux Arts style , was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Cicero inhabited 85,616 people. The population density was 5650.7 people per km ². There were 24,640 housing units at an average of 1626.2 per km². The population of Cicero was 48.27% White , 1.12% Black or African American , 0.89% Native American , 0.97% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 44.71% said other races belong to and 4.01% named two or more races. 77.44% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Cicero distributed to 23,115 households out of which 50.7% were living in children under 18 years. 56.1% of households were married, 13.7% had a female head of the household without a husband and 21.7% were not families. 17.5% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.70 and the average family size was 4.18.

The population was divided into 34.6% minors, 12.7% 18–24 year olds, 31.9% 25–44 year olds, 13.6% 45–64 year olds and 7.1% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 26 years. For every 100 women there were 105.8 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 105.9 men.

The median household income in Cicero was 42,044 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 47,883 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 27,424, compared to $ 21,398 for women. The per capita income was $ 12,489. 15.5% of the population and 13.2% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 19.5% of minors and 7.8% of those aged 65 and over.

Among the Hispanics in Cicero, residents of Mexican immigrants make up the largest group at 68.4%. Among non-Hispanics, the five largest groups are Polish-American (4.7%), Irish-American (3.7%), German-American (3.7%), Italian-American (3.0%), and Czech-American (2.3%) %).
