Tansu Çiller
Tansu Penbe Çiller (born May 24, 1946 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish politician. From 1993 to 1996 she was the first and so far only woman in the office of Prime Minister of Turkey .
Life
After studying economics at Bosphorus University , Connecticut University and Yale University , Çiller became a university professor of economics in Turkey . In 1990 she joined the Right Path Party. In 1991 she was elected to parliament and appointed Minister of Economic Affairs. She took over the chairmanship of the Right Way (DYP) on June 13, 1993 and prevailed against two male competitors the following day: She became head of a coalition government after the previous Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel had been elected president .
Çiller was considered a tough politician and initiated some reforms, but also had to deal with allegations of corruption . After the break of the coalition in 1996, she was foreign minister until 1997 under Necmettin Erbakan , who took over the post of prime minister after only three months in office of her successor Mesut Yılmaz .
After the parliamentary elections in 2002 , where the DYP narrowly failed to pass the 10% hurdle with 9.5%, it resigned from the chairmanship of its party.
She is married to Özer Uçuran Çiller and has two children.
