The Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique (CNSAD) in Paris is considered the oldest and most important drama school in France . It goes back to the École royale de chant et de déclamation founded in 1784 , in which speaking was a minor subject for musicians. This also explains the term conservatory , which is generally used for music schools, but not for drama schools.

In 1806 drama became a major. In 1946 the conservatory was divided, the theater was allowed to keep the Théâtre du Conservatoire , which was designed as a concert hall in 1811 , and the musicians moved out. The conservatory has had its current name since 1968.
