The GDR ice hockey championship in 1989/90 saw a change in the league . Due to the quick championship decision in the previous season - SG Dynamo Weißwasser won the title perfectly in the first six games - the association decided that instead of the previous two, in future three series with five games each in the "best of five" principle must be won. Nothing changed at the new champion Weißwasser, but this time the Lausitzers could only triumph in the fourth round over their arch rivals from SC Dynamo from Berlin. With this victory, Weißwasser was also the last GDR champion. In the course of the subsequent German reunification , the GDR ice hockey experienced its integration into the nationwide sports landscape, the two previous league clubs - as PEV Weißwasser and EHC Dynamo Berlin - were taken over into the Bundesliga for the next season .
The last edition of the GDR determination of the best was appropriately won by the record winner SG Dynamo Fritz Lesch Berlin . With the cessation of game operations from the coming season, some of the previous participants began a new beginning on an all-German amateur level.
