Green was already known for his speed in his youth: he could run the 100 meters in 10.08 seconds, the 200 meters in under 21 seconds and the 400 meters in under 46 seconds, qualified for the US national sprint championships and was competitor of the young Carl Lewis at the time . At the small University of Texas A&I , Green was on both the athletics and football teams, although at 1.75 meters he was considered “too small” for this sport.

Nevertheless, he was selected in the 1983 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins in 28th place, where he was immediately new regular cornerback in Joe Gibbs' team and was also used as a return specialist . In the first game against the Dallas Cowboys , Green managed to tackle the broken cowboy Tony Dorsett , who was then the fastest man in the NFL, in front of the end zone and thus prevent a touchdown . In his second year Green (109 tackles, five interceptions ) was elected to the Pro Bowl , which he managed seven times in his career. This year he made it to Super Bowl XVIII with the Redskins , but they lost to the Los Angeles Raiders with 9:38.

In 1987 he won Super Bowl XXII with Washington after scoring an important punt- return touchdown with broken ribs in the NFC Championship Game against the Chicago Bears . He won Super Bowl XXVI with Washington and was elected to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team . Although he was 37 years old at the time of his seventh Pro Bowl (1997), he was still considered one of the fastest players in the league. At the age of 42, Green resigned and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
