David Macpherson (born July 3, 1967 in Launceston , Tasmania ) is a retired Australian tennis player and tennis coach.

Life

Macpherson was trained at Tony Roches Tennis Academy and was a five-time national Australian tennis champion in doubles in the various age groups. He reached the double-finals of the US Open junior tournament in 1983 and won the Australian Open junior double title in 1985 . In the same year he became a professional tennis player. He specialized in men's doubles and won his first double title on the ATP Challenger Tour in 1988 . The following year he won three more Challenger doubles tournaments. He won his first title on the ATP World Tour in Toronto in 1990 alongside Patrick Galbraith . In 1992, after a highly successful year, he took part in the ATP World Tour Finals with his doubles partner Steve DeVries .

In addition to his 16 double titles - with nine different partners - he was another 13 times in a final, including the Masters tournament in Stockholm . He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1990 with position 293 in singles and in 1992 with position 11 in doubles.

He was only able to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament once, and in 1987 he failed in the second round of the Australian Open. In the doubles competition he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 1998 on the side of David Wheaton , but they were subject to Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde .

After the end of his professional career, Macpherson became a tennis coach. From August 2005 until their careers ended in August 2020, he coached the brothers Mike and Bob Bryan , one of the most successful doubles teams of all time. For the final of the Davis Cup 2014 against France , the Swiss Davis Cup team hired Macpherson as a double coach at short notice.
