Diego Costa , full name Diego da Silva Costa , (born October 7, 1988 in Lagarto , Sergipe ) is a Brazilian football player who has also had Spanish nationality since 2013 and has therefore played for the Spanish national team since 2014 . The striker has been under contract with Atlético Madrid since the end of September 2017 .

Career

In the club

Beginnings and move to Spain

Diego da Silva Costa began his career as a teenager with Barcelona Esportivo Capela in Ibiúna near São Paulo . At the age of 16 he went to Portugal to join Sporting Braga . First he was loaned to FC Penafiel , where he attracted major clubs in Europe. In the duel for the young, talented striker Atlético Madrid made the race; instead of using him himself he was awarded in the 2007/08 season to Celta Vigo in the Segunda División next to his club colleague Mario Suárez , as he did not have an EU passport at that time and could therefore no longer be accommodated in the squad. For the 2008/09 season Costa was loaned to the Spanish second division club Albacete Balompié . There he scored nine goals in 35 games and recommended himself for higher tasks.

Real Valladolid

The following season, Diego Costa moved to Real Valladolid . Atlético Madrid, however, secured a buyback option after the first year. On 13 September 2009 he was there his debut in La Liga in the game against FC Valencia . After a year, Atlético Madrid used the buyback option and Costa left the club as an established regular after he was relegated.

Return to Atlético Madrid

In the 2010/11 season he was the third striker behind Diego Forlán and Sergio Agüero . He was substituted on 15 times in 23 appearances and scored six times. In preparation for the 2011/12 season , he tore a cruciate ligament early on and missed the entire first half of the season. In order to be able to collect enough match practice afterwards, he was awarded to Rayo Vallecano until the end of the season . Costa took advantage of this match practice and scored ten goals in 16 games for Rayo. After his fourth loan, he finally established himself in the team at Atlético and was third in the league with the team, which meant that the club qualified directly for the 2013/14 Champions League . He also reached the final of the Copa del Rey with the team and competed against Real Madrid there. In the final - which was played in Real's home ground , the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu - Atlético fell behind early, which Costa equalized in the 35th minute, and won the Copa del Rey for the first time since the 1996 double with a goal in extra time .

Chelsea FC

Costa as a player for Chelsea (2015)

For the 2014/15 season , Costa moved to the Premier League for Chelsea . He received a five-year contract valid until June 30, 2019. In his first four league games he scored seven goals. During the season he scored a total of 20 goals in 26 league appearances and won the English championship and the League Cup with the club . The 2015/16 season was less successful for Costa and Chelsea FC. Due to a weak season in which José Mourinho had been replaced by Guus Hiddink , he scored twelve goals in 28 appearances. Under the new coach Antonio Conte , Chelsea FC won the championship again in the 2016/17 season , to which Costa contributed 20 goals in 35 games.

Return to Atlético Madrid

In the summer of 2017, Chelsea coach Antonio Conte Costa said by text message that he was no longer planning with him. In the preseason he was suspended for a game after a dispute with the coach. According to his description, Costa should have trained with the reserve team and should not have entered the cabin and had no contact with the team. Costa then stayed in his native Brazil and did not return to London after receiving a week's special leave. As a replacement, Chelsea signed Álvaro Morata from Real Madrid . According to his own testimony, he received multiple fines for staying away. Costa said that the only option for him was a return to Atlético Madrid . A transfer in the summer transfer period failed. Since FIFA had imposed a transfer ban on Atlético Madrid until the end of the year , he should not have played in competitive games until then.

On September 21, 2017, Chelsea FC and Atlético Madrid confirmed that they had agreed to transfer Costas. On September 26, 2017, Costa was signed. He started team training immediately and has been eligible to play since January 2018.

On January 3, 2018, Costa made his comeback in a 4-0 win against third division club Lleida Esportiu in the Copa del Rey and scored the interim 3-0 five minutes after being substituted on. On his comeback in the Primera División on January 6, 2018, he scored the goal in a 2-0 win against Getafe FC and was sent off with the yellow-red card at the subsequent goal celebration.

In the national team

In March 2013 he was appointed to the squad of the Brazilian senior team for the first time by national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari . In the two friendlies against Italy and Russia he was substituted on in the final quarter of an hour and has not been called up since then.

After he had not played in a competitive game, he decided in October 2013 to play for the Spanish national football team in the future . He was then nominated by Vicente del Bosque for the international matches on November 16, 2013 against Guinea and on November 19, 2013 against South Africa , where he failed due to a torn hamstring. Costa finally made his debut on March 5, 2014 in a 1-0 friendly win over Italy over the full playing time. He was appointed to the Spanish squad for the World Cup in Brazil and was in the starting line-up for the opening game against the Netherlands and the following game against Chile.

Four years later he was called back to the Spanish squad for the 2018 World Cup . In the opening game against Portugal, he scored twice for his team at 3: 3.
