action

Tim Conrad, who works as a financial analyst at a private equity firm in Los Angeles and would like to make a career, finds a way to acquire the wealthy Swiss businessman Martin Mueller as a client.

Impressed by Tim's ingenuity, his boss, Lance Fender, says Tim is a candidate for a promotion but wants to get to know him better. He invites him to a "dinner for winners" (dinner for winners) one in which he found an eccentric person with a special talent and must bring; The winner deserves a trophy and the manager who brought her or him earns glory. Tim concludes from the context that this is more of a "dinner for idiots" than one for winners, and the guests with the special talent should be mocked.

Tim's friend Julie lands a curatorial deal for the eccentric artist Kieran Vollard, and Tim unsuccessfully applies for her hand. Tim agrees not to attend the dinner party after Julie is appalled by the gruesome nature of the subject.

Tim accidentally hits amateur taxidermist Barry Speck in his car when Barry tries to haul a dead mouse off the street. Barry is an employee of the US tax authorities and in his spare time makes dioramas with mice puppets out of real, albeit dead, mice. Tim witnesses Barry's bizarre behavior and realizes he is the perfect idiot for dinner. Barry shows up at Tim's apartment and accidentally invites Darla, whom Tim has been stalking since her one-night stand years ago. Barry realizes the mistake and decides to prevent Darla from entering Tim's apartment.

When Julie arrives at Tim's apartment, Barry confuses her with Darla and sends her away, giving Julie the impression that Tim is cheating on her. Barry calls Vollard and finds the number saved on the phone. As he speaks to him, he and Tim think they can hear Julie in the background and go to Vollard's apartment. Barry throws Tim's key through Vollard's apartment window and is forced to break in, only to find Kieran preparing to make love with two girls dressed like animals (neither of whom is Julie), and Barry goes home.

Barry opens the door and finds Darla in front of it. Julie calls and asks Tim if he's having an affair and Darla steals the phone and stuffs it in her pants. While Tim is hiding in his bedroom, Darla and Barry get into a fight, which causes the terrified Darla to walk away. Julie left her phone in Tim's apartment and a voice message from Vollard reveals that Julie is going to his ranch.

Barry offers to get Tim to a job in the tax office to find Vollard's ranch address, where they meet with Barry's boss and rival Therman Murch, who has teased Barry's wife. Tim goes to brunch with the Muellers the next day, however, but Barry falls into a deep sleep, with Darla pretending to be Julie. Tim is pushed into asking Darla to marry him, but Barry and Julie get in the way. Tim and Barry chase Julie down to Vollard's ranch, where Tim accidentally insults Barry.

To his surprise, Tim finds Barry already at Fender's dinner party. Barry is a hit with the mice group, and a contestant for the trophy, but Therman comes unexpectedly and embarrasses Barry with his mind control. Tim then tells Barry everything and, after some encouragement, lets Barry win with "brain control" before letting his boss and his co-responsible persons uncover the truth. A guest reacts insulted to the revelation and causes chaos in which Mueller loses a finger.

Tim is fired, like Julie, after Barry reveals to Vollard that it would be a problem to keep her working for him. Tim and Julie get married, Barry enters into a relationship with Darla, creates a work of art with Vollard, and hosts a monthly Breakfast for Champions for all losers. Therman writes a book in the psychiatric clinic and Tim manages the construction of a new museum in Switzerland for Mueller. Fender's company goes bankrupt and he is dubbed "Wall Street's Biggest Loser" by the media.

Reviews

“Dinner for Spinners is a very likeable comedy, which scores above all with the great performance by Steve Carell. But otherwise the film also provides entertaining entertainment and many successful gags. Of course, the structure is quite conventional, but director Jay Roach seems to have found a lot of joy in turning the main character's life towards the abyss, which is why the obligatory happy ending is extremely satisfactory. Thanks to the many successful ideas and the good-humored actors, Dinner for Spinner is one of the best comedies of the year to date. "

"The problems with this version of the" Dinners for Spinners "are manifold, but the main culprit must be attributed to the script that [sic] completely screwed up six different cooks. The fact that the situations in which the unfortunate Tim is sent are not exactly original and imaginative, one could swallow if necessary, is just seldom reinvented the wheel of lively comedy. The fact that these situations are far too seldom funny, but mostly just a shake of the head, is hard to excuse. "

“The fact that the film doesn't get out of hand with all the chaos on the screen is thanks to Jay Roach's tight direction, who, despite the high speed and the long running time, always maintains an overview. With the chic "Mouseterpiece" dioramas by Barry, for whose funny and loving design the modelers deserve special praise, Roach even manages to give the film a bit of visual originality. So “Dinner for Spinners” is a furious slapstick attack on the laughing muscles, which is very entertaining for almost two hours up to the turbulent dinner finale (which does not even occur in the original). That is certainly not the highest form of art - but still damn funny. "

"The US remake of the French comedy of the same name by Francis Veber (1997) brings up a number of absurd eccentricities, without the double game with the ridiculous being convincing, because the cynics have more leverage in the end."
