The Dover International Speedway is a NASCAR -Rennstrecke in Dover in the State of Delaware with a length of exactly one mile. Because it puts a lot of stress on racing cars, it was nicknamed The Monster Mile , with White Lightning being an older nickname . It is owned by Dover Motorsports and is also their headquarters.

Route profile

The circuit is unusual in several ways: the track is made of concrete, while most of the other NASCAR circuits are made of asphalt. In contrast to many other small ovals, the track has an asphalt flat area (the apron) in the curves. Since crashed vehicles - still able to roll to some extent - inevitably end here due to the high elevation, the route is also jokingly referred to as the "self cleaning race track".

The Dover Downs horse racing track is right next to the speedway , which is why it is often referred to by this name. The racetrack is also part of a large amusement complex where gambling is also possible. Speedway and the amusement complex originally belonged to Dover Downs Entertainment , but were split into two separate companies on the initiative of NASCAR in February 2002. As a result, the name of the circuit changed from Dover Downs International Speedway to Dover International Speedway .

Dover Motorsports, which emerged from the division of Dover Downs Entertainment, has other racing tracks in addition to Dover International Speedway, including the Nashville Superspeedway . There are therefore always ideas to move a NASCAR Cup Series race from Dover to Nashville , but this is unlikely due to the strong audience interest.

Originally the race length at Dover International Speedway was 500 miles. Following a rule change by NASCAR, races over a distance of at least 500 miles will be held on speedways longer than a mile, so the distance in Dover has been reduced to 400 miles. In addition to the NASCAR series, the Indy Racing League was also a guest at Dover International Speedway in 1998 and 1999 . The races were won by Scott Sharp and Greg Ray .

The maximum audience capacity was 135,000, but the number of seats was reduced to 95,500 in 2011 and 2014.

Dover monsters

Due to its nickname The Monster Mile , the racetrack received a new mascot in 2004, called "Miles the Monster" or "Miles the Monster". It is often called "Dover Monster" or simply "Miles" among fans. It can be seen on the winner's cup, entrance tickets and souvenirs.
