em @ il for you is an American romantic comedy film from the year 1998 with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the lead roles. It is a free remake of the film Rendezvous after the shop closes (original title: The Shop Around The Corner ) by Ernst Lubitsch from 1940. The plot was moved from Budapest in the 1930s to New York in the 1990s and modernized accordingly from the original correspondence between two strangers (who actually know each other) a communication by e-mail . The basis for the 1940 film was based on the plot of the play Perfumery by Miklós László .

In New York living entrepreneur Joe Fox, son of the owner of a chain of bookstores "Fox & Sons Bookstores" learns in Internet know a woman posing as Shopgirl outputs. At the same time, he oversees the preparations for the opening of a new branch in the chain. Kathleen Kelly, who runs a small bookstore in the area, tries to downplay the potential business downside while worried her staff. The branch is opened. During a reception, Kelly meets Joe Fox and an argument ensues. She shares her experiences with her e-mail friend, whom she only knows as NY152 .
Fox arranges a meeting with the shop girl . When he sees that it is Kathleen Kelly, he does not identify himself as NY152 and later invents an excuse why he did not show up. Kelly has to close her shop. Fox comforts Kelly in the chat, becomes her boyfriend. Together with her he thinks about possible reasons why NY152 does not show up.
A second meeting between Shopgirl and NY152 is arranged. When Kelly sees that the pseudonym is Joe Fox, she cries with joy and says that she wished he was the unknown NY152 .

“Uninspired staged, fashionably pepped up adaptation of a stage play that served as a template for the film ' Rendezvous after the store closes ' by Ernst Lubitsch (1939) and the Broadway musical ' She Loves Me '. The main actors can never credibly transfer the romantic love of their chat room acquaintance to film reality. When it comes to camera work, too, the film remains conventional and is lovelessly garnished with a disappointing soundtrack. "
Despite this negative German criticism, the film has often been compared to Schlaflos in Seattle , which also featured Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan and Nora Ephron. The main actors were described as "sympathetic", but it was criticized that some topics such as the concentration of the business world and the displacement of small businesses were only touched on in passing. The all too obvious product placements for brands like AOL or Starbucks were highlighted negatively. Even the original title of the film You've Got Mail is viewed as an exemplary product placement in the film industry, as this is exactly the message that users of the AOL online service get to hear when they have received a new email.

Meg Ryan was nominated for the Film Award Golden Globe nomination. The film won the Golden Screen and the Bogey Award . Meg Ryan and Greg Kinnear won the Blockbuster Entertainment Award , for which Tom Hanks was nominated. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan were nominated for the American Comedy Award . The film was nominated for a Golden Satellite Award in three categories, including "Best Picture (Comedy or Musical)".
George Fenton won the BMI Film Music Award .
The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating “valuable”.
