A suitcase for the last trip

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A suitcase for the last trip is a touring exhibition on the subject of death that has been shown in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Russia and Mexico since 2006. The idea and concept come from the author, undertaker and grief counselor Fritz Roth . The exhibition focuses on the finiteness of life and documents the subjective way of dealing with death.

Project

In preparation for his art project, Fritz Roth wrote to around 6,000 people in Germany asking them to participate, from whom he selected 103. In 2005, they received identical suitcases with the dimensions 35 × 55 cm, combined with the request to pack them within two months symbolically for their last trip with things that make their life unmistakable. Each suitcase is accompanied by a profile of the person who packed it, which, in addition to age and occupation, records the personal notes and thoughts when packing the suitcase and provides information about the selected suitcase contents. In addition to personal items such as family photos or pipes, many participants chose symbolic exhibits, such as their own footprints cast in sand or a skeleton with a skull. Some suitcases were also returned empty.

On January 15, 2006, the film Once Beyond and Back by Phillip Engel, which shows the development and course of the art project, was first broadcast on ARD . He accompanies two of those involved, a 64-year-old master butcher and a 25-year-old design student. The 2006 book Once Beyond and Back: A Suitcase for Fritz Roth's Last Journey documents the art project.

The suitcases were first exhibited on May 19, 2006 in Roth's home town of Bergisch Gladbach . Since then, they have been shown as a touring exhibition throughout Germany as well as in Lucerne , Vienna , Moscow and Mexico , supplemented by further suitcases from the respective exhibition locations. For the Moscow exhibition as part of the Germany Year of the Goethe Institute in Russia, the exhibition was expanded in 2013 by 50 suitcases from Russian participants. For the Germany Year 2016 in Mexico City, the concept was retained and 50 suitcases from Germany and 50 from Mexico were exhibited.
