Elise (first name)
Elise (also Elize, Élise ) is a female given name.
Origin, forms of name and use
Elise is a short form of Elisabeth (see there for meaning). The name variant was one of the more popular first names in German-speaking countries until 1900, but decreased in frequency in the following decades in favor of the similar names Elsa , Else and Ilse , until it dropped out of the statistics of the 200 most common first names around 1930.
Elise / Elize are also common in the English-speaking world as variants of Elisabeth / Elizabeth. Élise is the French name variant.

Naming of works, objects and places
The piano piece Für Elise von Ludwig von Beethoven , composed in 1810, became known under this name from 1865 after the musicologist Ludwig Nohl published Beethoven's autograph. To whom the piece was dedicated is still unknown. Therese Malfatti and Elisabeth Röckel are believed to be the recipients of the dedication ; according to further theories, Elise Barensfeld and Elise Schachner also come into consideration.
Various, mostly geographical, objects in German-speaking countries were named after the woman's name, for example: Elisenau , Elisenbad , Elisenbrunnen , Elisendorf , Elisenfels , Elisengarten , Elisenhain , Elisenheim , Elisenhof , Elisenhöhe , Elisenthal , Elisentreppe and Elisenturm . The Elisen Lebkuchen is a name for particularly fine wafer gingerbread.
