Sūduva Marijampolė (full name: Futbolo Klubas Sūduva Marijampolė ) is a Lithuanian football club from the district capital Marijampolė and currently plays in the first division .

history

Sūduva Marijampolė was founded in 1968. The club played in the Lithuanian regional championship during the Soviet era . After the country gained independence, the club started under class and played in the second division from the 1995/96 season. Although the promotion succeeded in the following season, shortly before the start of the first division season, however, the license was returned and continued to play second class. After half of the 1998/99 season, participation in the second division was ended and, as an automatic relegation, in the transition season 1999, when the calendar year rhythm was changed, moved to the third division.

There they finished second with only one defeat and thus narrowly missed the promotion. The following season succeeded as the first in the table to rise and with a second place in the second division in 2001 the direct march through to the A Lyga . There they fought against relegation in the first few years, before taking third place in 2005, when they took part in the European Cup for the first time. In qualifying for the UEFA Cup , they won in the first round against the Welsh club Rhyl FC , but then failed at Club Bruges in the second round.

In 2006 they won the Lithuanian Cup for the first time with a 1-0 victory over Ekranas Panevėžys . In the 2009/10 season Sūduva reached the final of the Baltic League . After it was 3: 3 after extra time, the club lost 3: 5 on penalties against FK Ventspils .
