The Feistritz is a river 115 kilometers in length in northeastern and eastern Styria .

Run and landscape

The Feistritz rises south on Feistritzsattel , west of the Hochwechsel . The spring run is also called Wechselgraben or Sattelbach , until it joins the Ambach - from the Schöberlriegel of the Wechselstock.

The Feistritz then flows south to the village of Feistritzwald , and east to Rettenegg . Here she picks up the Pfaffenbach from the Pfaffensattel . Up to that point it is also called Weisse Feistritz , and the Pfaffenbach Schwarze Feistritz , so that there are also indications of a source area up to the Stuhleck in the west.

As far as a little below Rettenegg, where it bends south, it forms the western boundary of the changeover area in the broader sense, then that between the Fischbacher Alps in the west and the Joglland in the east. It flows in a row through Birkfeld , and forms, meandering here , from the Naintschbach to Oberfeistritz (northeast of Weiz ), the eastern border of the Grazer Bergland . Up to this point it is also called Feistritzbach .

From Oberfeistritz it then flows primarily to the southeast, and as the southern border of the Joglland to the Eastern Styrian hill country, it is also seen as the border of the Alps as a whole. It forms several gorge landscapes in a row , such as the Freienbergklamm , the Stubenbergklamm or the Feistritzklamm . The Feistritzklamm is designated as a Natura 2000 protected area according to both the Fauna-Flora-Habitat and the Birds Directive. On a rocky slope above the Feistritzklamm is at an exposed location of the seat of the Herber Steiner , the Herbersteins lock .

In Stubenberg of about 40 hectares having artificial lake is Stubenbergsee fed with water from flowing past Feistritz. Here the Feistritz finally leaves the Alps and crosses the eastern Styrian hill country in its middle course. Before the Ilzbach flows into the Feistritz near Ilz, Feistritz Castle rises north of it on the right bank .

The Feistritz flows through Fürstenfeld , and then forms with the lower reaches the Styrian-Burgenland border , which still depicts the old river meanders. The river flows roughly 6 km southeast of Fürstenfeld and already in Burgenland in the municipality of Rudersdorf , from the right into the Lafnitz , which has flowed parallel to Feistritz only a few hundred meters away since Fürstenfeld.

Hydrography

The average volume of water in the Feistritz in Maierhofen is around 7.5 cubic meters per second.

Transport and tourism

The Feistritztal-Radweg  R8 makes it possible to follow the course of the river from Ratten to Fürstenfeld over a length of 85 km . In the section from Ratten to Birkfeld , the 11-kilometer cycle path uses the former route of the Feistritztalbahn . This follows the course of the river from Oberfeistritz to the current terminus in Birkfeld.
