Description and meaning

National flag of Burkina Faso in La Gacilly, France

The national flag uses the traditional Pan-African colors . The flag is divided horizontally into red and green, with a golden five-pointed star in the middle.

Red represents the blood shed by the martyrs of the revolution and the victims of the people of Burkina Faso. Green stands for the agricultural wealth of the country, which is supposed to preserve the joy of the people. The yellow star symbolically leads the democratic people's revolution in its brilliant progress.

history

From December 9, 1959, the country ran its own flag under the name of Upper Volta , which it retained after independence from France in 1960. The colors of the flag are derived from the names of the country's three main rivers, Black Volta , White Volta, and Red Volta . The similarity to the black-white-red flag of the German Empire ( 3: 5 ) is coincidental. The presidential standard showed the same tricolor with an aspect ratio of 1: 1.

In 1983 there was a coup d'état, which was followed by the introduction of new state symbols and names. The design comes from the primary school teacher Rouamba Adama , who clearly wanted to end colonial history once and for all with the pan-African colors and the farewell to a tricolor . The presidential standard is again a 1: 1 version of the national flag.

Others

On the national holiday, December 11th, every citizen of Burkina Faso is required to set the national flag.
