Frank Schmidt (born January 3, 1974 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ) is a former German soccer player who has been a coach at 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 since 2007 .

Player career

Frank Schmidt started playing football at the local SC in Giengen an der Brenz , then moved to local rivals TSG. He later played for SSV Ulm in 1846 . From there he moved to 1. FC Nürnberg and was part of the club's Bundesliga squad as a young player in the 1992/93 season . Since he was not used, he moved to the aspiring Middle Franconian upper division TSV Vestenbergsgreuth . With this he qualified for the Regionalliga Süd, which was introduced in 1994 . When TSV merged its competitive footballers with SpVgg Fürth to form SpVgg Greuther Fürth , Frank Schmidt was one of the Vestenbergsgreuther players who belonged to the new squad. However, he was not happy there and left the SpVgg after only five missions during the winter break. After leaving Fürth, Schmidt tried his luck in Austria . First he played for the Wiener Sport-Club and then for a season with the second division First Vienna FC 1894 . In 1998 he accepted an offer from the regional league team Alemannia Aachen . With Alemannia he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga . The goal-scoring defender stayed with Alemannia for a total of five years. His most successful season for him personally was the 2001/02 season , when he came to 27 games and six goals. But in the following season he moved to SV Waldhof Mannheim for the winter break . There he only got eight missions. Therefore, after six months in Mannheim, he joined the up-and-coming league club Heidenheimer SB . With this he was promoted to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg , where he was the captain of a team that has always been among the top 5 in Baden-Württemberg since the promotion. After the end of the 2006/07 season, Frank Schmidt ended his active career.

Coaching career

After Dieter Märkle was dismissed on September 17, 2007 as coach of the Heidenheimer SB, now renamed 1. FC Heidenheim, Schmidt initially took over the coaching post and got a contract until the winter break. Under him, however, the success returned, so that he took over the post for a longer period of time. At the end of the season he led the FCH into the fourth division regional league, and in the 2008/09 season even as champion of the regional league south in the third division . In the summer of 2010, Frank Schmidt began his one-year training as a soccer teacher at the sports university in Cologne. On March 15, 2011, Schmidt's contract with FCH was prematurely extended to summer 2015. On April 19, 2014, he was promoted to the 2nd division three game days before the end of the season . The association then extended the contract with Schmidt until June 30, 2020.
