Franz Defregger , from 1883 Knight von Defregger , (born April 30, 1835 at Ederhof near Stronach, Iselsberg-Stronach municipality , East Tyrol ; † January 2, 1921 in Munich ) was an Austrian - Bavarian genre and history painter and representative of the Munich School .

Life

The Tyrolean farmer's son sold his inherited farm in 1860 in order to pay off his two sisters and emigrate to America. Nothing came of that, however, and so he came to Innsbruck in 1860 and studied with the sculptor and professor at the Innsbruck trade school Michael Stolz .

In autumn 1860 he presented himself to Karl Theodor von Piloty in Munich . There he attended the preparatory class at the Königliche Kunstgewerbeschule with Hermann Dyck . On July 19, 1861, he passed the entrance exam at the Royal Art Academy , where he enrolled in the painting class of Cornelius' pupil Hermann Anschütz .

Defregger stayed in Paris from 1863 to 1865. You can also prove that you have studied at the École des beaux-arts there . The enrollment took place on the recommendation of Alexander Laemlein . In 1864 Defregger even took part in the Salon des Refusés . The salon catalog of 1864 also lists him as "élève de l'École des Beaux-Arts", as a student. In addition, Defregger formed in Paris autodidactically of museums, art collections and studios on through life drawing and a thorough study.

On July 8, 1865, he returned to Munich and worked on drafts. From 1867 to 1870 he worked alongside Hans Makart and Gabriel von Max in the studio of the Munich history painter Piloty. His paintings quickly became popular with the public, and from 1878 to 1910 he was professor of history painting in the composing class at the Munich Art Academy. He liked to paint portraits , motifs from everyday rural life and dramatic scenes from the Tyrolean uprising of 1809.

Defregger was awarded the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown in 1883 and thus elevated to the personal nobility status as a "Knight of" . In 1909 he was awarded the Grand Commander of this order. He has received numerous prizes and awards, including the Prussian order Pour le Mérite for science and the arts . In 1906 Defregger's work was recognized at the exhibition of the century of German art in Berlin . His students were the Gardena Josef Moroder Lusenberg and Hans Perathoner , Lovis Corinth , Walter Thor , Hugo Engl , Fritz Prölß , Emma Muller , Ludwig Schmid-Reutte and many others. Defregger also worked in the studio with other artists who felt obliged to the same style of the Munich school . Especially Rudolf Epp should be counted here.

The architect Georg von Hauberrisser built his private home in Munich, the Defregger House . His residence in Bolzano , Villa Defregger , where the painter usually stayed twice a year for long periods, was built in 1879 according to plans by the Bolzano city ​​architect Sebastian Altmann .

Franz von Defregger died at the age of 85 and was buried in the family crypt in the Munich North Cemetery (grave no. 51-14-1).

In 1922, Defreggerstraße in Vienna- Meidling (12th district) was named after him.

Defreggergasse , which was named after him in Vienna- Hietzing (13th district) in 1927, was renamed in 1955 to Möglichasse.

A street in Bozen was also named after Franz von Defregger: From 1906 to 1929 today's Leonardo-da-Vinci-Straße was called that; Defreggerstrasse has existed in the Gries district since 1946 . There is also Defreggerstrasse in Berlin in the Treptow-Köpenick administrative district . Below the Großvenediger , the Defreggerhaus refuge, built in 1887, bears his name. There is also Defreggerstraße in Germering / Harthaus (suburb of Munich / Fürstenfeldbruck district). There is also a Defreggerweg in the small community of Bad Wiessee (Ringsee district) on the Tegernsee.

In Austria, streets (alleys, paths) are named after him in numerous other places, for example in Graz, Innsbruck, Kufstein, St. Pölten, Amstetten, Lienz, Traun, Kottingbrunn. In Germany also in Regensburg, Haar, Haimhausen, Leipzig, in South Tyrol in Vahrn / Varna.
