The Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium (also short: FEG ) is the second oldest school in today's Hamburg area (after the Johanneum ) and is located in the Heimfeld district in the Harburg district . The grammar school is attended by around 800 students who are currently taught by around 60 teachers.

history

The origins of today's Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium can be traced back to 1628. Since 1968 the school, which until 1959 was called Scientific High School for Boys in Harburg and then Gymnasium for Boys Harburg , has been named after the first German President Friedrich Ebert . Co-education was introduced around the same time .

Lessons offered

The school basically offers an ancient language branch with Latin as the first (English is taught in parallel) and ancient Greek as the third foreign language , the modern language branch with English as the first, French or Latin as the second foreign language and Spanish or Greek as the third foreign language. Since 2011, the modern language branch has placed particular emphasis on STEM subjects , while the old language branch has been suspended until the curriculum has been revised. In grade ten, Russian was also offered as an elective until 2009 .

The third profile branch is the music branch, in which, in addition to the linguistic offerings of the modern language branch, music is increasingly taught and each class forms its own class orchestra.

The school is housed in a wing of a building ensemble that was built in 1929/1930 on the initiative of Walter Dudek , the then social democratic mayor of Harburg-Wilhelmsburg , and consists of a hall designed as a town hall, the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle , and two Wing buildings existed as school buildings for the then Realschule and the Realgymnasium. The buildings have been a listed building since 1973. The second wing is now mostly used by the Harburg State School for Social Education. In 2002, the available classroom was expanded by two pavilions ("Der kleine Friedrich", "Der Blaue Friedrich"), which are mainly used for the lower grades.

Since the introduction of the Abitur after 12 years in 2004, the FEG has been offering lunch on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the specially created canteen for pupils who have afternoon classes due to the increased number of weekly lessons. Up to grade 10, one hour of “lunch break” (usually 5th or 6th) is available on long school days. Since 2006 food has been ordered online at monthly intervals. There is also a cafeteria .

Partner schools

There are partner schools with student exchanges in Spain , Israel , Poland , Mexico , Great Britain , France and the USA (as part of the German American Partnership Program ).

Friedrich-Ebert-Halle

The Friedrich-Ebert-Halle, used as an auditorium as well as for public concerts and theater events, has 1,100 seats. On June 22nd and 23rd, 1961, the Beatles recorded their first record ( My Bonnie ) with Tony Sheridan in their basement, a memorial plaque in the entrance area commemorates this. In the 1960s, Peter Frankenfeld also broadcast many Saturday evening television shows from the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle. In 1983 the Dead Kennedys gave a concert in the hall after which a major renovation was necessary. Deutsche Grammophon also used the hall for various classic productions.
