Preliminary round
Argentina had been drawn into the so-called "death group", Group F. There was still no doubt about reaching the round of 16. After all, you were the top favorite for winning the tournament. The country itself was in the midst of the worst economic crisis in its history. The Argentine team promised to do everything in their power to distract their fellow countrymen at home.
It started according to plan with a win against Nigeria. This defeated one of the two main competitors. In the next game there was a loss to arch-rivals England, but nothing was lost yet. A win in the last group game against the underdog Sweden would be enough.
Argentina was warned: France had left the day before. At first there was a curiosity: Claudio Caniggia was shown the red card in the 45th minute on the reserve bench for insulting the referee. Somewhat surprisingly, the Swedes, for whom a draw would be enough, took the lead in the 59th minute. The superior South Americans kept getting stuck in the stable Swedish cover. The equalizer came shortly before the end. Too late, Argentina had left third in the group.
