World Cup tournaments

World Championships 1930 to 1974

The United Arab Emirates, which emerged from the Trucial States , a British protectorate , became independent on December 2, 1971. The United Arab Emirates Football Association was founded that same year, but was not incorporated into FIFA until 1974 . Therefore, the United Arab Emirates could not participate in the first ten World Cup tournaments.

World Championship 1978

For the World Cup in Argentina , the United Arab Emirates wanted to first qualify . They were supposed to face Kuwait , Bahrain and Qatar , but then withdrew.

World Championship 1982

The team did not take part in qualifying for the World Cup in Spain .

1986 World Championship

In the qualification for the second World Cup in Mexico , the United Arab Emirates then participated. The West and East Asian teams were each awarded a starting place. In the first round, the UAE were supposed to play against Saudi Arabia , which had won the Asian Football Cup in 1984 , and Oman , but the latter withdrew after the draw. On April 12, 1985, the UAE played their first World Cup qualifying match in Riyadh and were 0-0 against the Asian champions. With a 1-0 win in the second leg in Dubai a week later they reached the next round. Here they met Iraq and lost the home game 2: 3. Although they won the away game 2-1, they were eliminated due to the away goals rule . Iraq was then able to qualify for the World Cup finals against Syria for the only time so far.

World Cup 1990

In qualifying for the second World Cup in Italy , the team should compete in the first group stage against Kuwait , Pakistan and South Yemen . The latter withdrew, however, so that only four games were to be played. With three wins and one defeat, first place was taken ahead of the tied Kuwaitis as the UAE had the better goal difference. Pakistan lost all their games, but the goals they conceded were what helped the UAE progress. In the Asian finals, which were held in Singapore and Malaysia , the United Arab Emirates finished second behind South Korea , followed by Qatar , China , Saudi Arabia and North Korea . They had qualified for the World Cup finals together with South Korea. They had only won one game, but never lost a game.

In Italy, they faced Colombia in their first World Cup game , which had qualified for the first time since 1962. They kept it 0-0 for 49 minutes, but then had to accept two goals. In the second game against eventual world champions Germany , they held the 0-0 against stormy attacking Germans for 35 minutes in thunder and lightning in the pouring rain. Then Rudi Völler and Jürgen Klinsmann scored two goals within a minute. After all, Khalid Ismaïl Mubarak scored the first World Cup goal for the UAE immediately after the half-time break with the interim 2-1. Then the German team increased the pressure again and came to a safe 5-1 victory, which could have been higher. Against Yugoslavia , they scored the interim 2-1, but then lost 4-1 when Khalil Ghanim Mubarak saw the red card . The Emirates said goodbye to the World Cup for at least 32 years. They were coached by the Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira , who four years later led his home country to his fourth World Cup title.

World Championship 1994

Four years later, the qualification failed again. In the first qualifying round for the World Cup in the USA , the UAE finished second behind Japan in tournaments in Japan and the United Arab Emirates, ahead of Thailand , Bangladesh and Sri Lanka . Japan was then unable to qualify for the World Cup finals either.

World Championship 1998

In qualifying for the second World Cup in France , the UAE prevailed in the first round at tournaments in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates against Jordan and Bahrain , surrendering only one point and conceding only one goal. In the second round, however, after South Korea and Japan, which qualified for the first time, only third place was taken, ahead of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan , which participated for the first time. The qualification was lost in the last two home games: After a 0-0 win against Uzbekistan, they lost 3-1 to South Korea, which secured the group victory.

World Championship 2002

In addition to the two co-hosts South Korea and Japan, two other Asian teams qualified directly for the first World Cup in Asia . Another had the chance to qualify through the intercontinental playoffs. In the first round, the UAE prevailed with four wins and two defeats against Yemen , India and Brunei . The highest international win came with the 12-0 win against Brunei. In the second round, behind China , which qualified for the first time, came second, ahead of Uzbekistan, Qatar and Oman . The UAE had to compete against the runner-up in the parallel group. This was Iran and both games were lost 0-1 and 0-3. Iran then failed in the intercontinental playoffs to Ireland .

World Championship 2006

In qualifying for the second World Cup in Germany , the UAE only had to compete in the second round and only finished second behind North Korea, ahead of Thailand and Yemen. The qualification was gambled away by a 0: 3 on the penultimate matchday in Thailand. Then the final 1-0 win against North Korea was worthless, which had not lost a game before and in the end had one point more than the UAE. North Korea then failed in the third round.

World Championship 2010

In qualifying for the first World Cup in Africa , the UAE only had to intervene in the third round. In a group with Iran, Syria and Kuwait , the UAE prevailed together with Iran, as they had to accept one less goal than the tied Syrians. In the fourth round they finished with only one draw, but seven defeats, only in last place behind South and North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Iran. For the first time, South and North Korea managed to qualify for the World Cup finals at the same time.

World Championship 2014

In qualifying for the second World Cup in Brazil , the UAE did not have to compete until the second round and beat India 3-0 and 2-2 . The third round, in which South Korea, Lebanon and Kuwait were the opponents, was only concluded with the last place in the group, with only the last home game against Lebanon being won when they had already qualified for the next round. South Korea was then able to prevail in the further qualification, while Lebanon failed in the fourth round.

World Championship 2018

In qualifying for the World Cup in Russia , the UAE did not have to compete until the second round and met Saudi Arabia , Palestine , Malaysia and East Timor . With five wins, two draws and only one defeat, the team was third-best group runner-up and qualified for the third round. Here Australia , Japan , again Saudi Arabia , Iraq and Thailand were the opponents. After coach Mahdi Ali resigned after a 2-0 draw against Australia in March 2017, Edgardo Bauza , who was dismissed as Argentine national coach in April, was signed as the new national coach in May . In the end, the UAE finished fourth with four wins, one draw and five defeats. They still had the chance to qualify until the last day of the match. But since the UAE lost to Iraq while the Saudis and Australians with the same number of points won their games, they even missed third place, which entitles them to playoff games against the other group third.
