history

Finds from the Bronze Age prove a settlement since the Castro culture . From the time of the Roman occupation are u. a. Villas and apartment buildings have been found. The current place was probably created in connection with the repopulation of the area during the Reconquista and the establishment of the independent Kingdom of Portugal in 1140.

In the surveys under King D. Dinis in 1314, the place is listed as a larger municipality. Only in the course of the 15th and especially the 16th century did the place develop more significantly when Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition also settled here. As a result, the population grew and early manufactories emerged. The establishment of the Real Fábrica-Escola (English: royal factory and school) by the Marquês de Pombal in the 17th century marked a further development of the place, especially through the textile industry and wool processing. In 1747 it became the seat of its own circle.

The Fundão, which has been run as a vila (small town) since 1747, was elevated to a cidade (town) in 1988 .
