Garry Thür

Garry Thür (actually Gerfried Thür ; born March 19, 1973 in Dornbirn ) is an Austrian politician ( NEOS ) and manager. Thür ran for his party in the state elections in Vorarlberg 2019 on the third place in the state list and was subsequently elected to the Vorarlberg state parliament. He was sworn in as a member of parliament at the constituent session of the state parliament for the 31st legislative period on November 6, 2019.

Professional background

Garry Thür was born with the real name Gerfried Thür as a child of Viennese parents on March 19, 1973 in the Vorarlberg city ​​of Dornbirn . From 1983 to 1987 he attended the lower level of the Bundesrealgymnasium and Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium Dornbirn-Schoren , and from 1987 to 1991 the upper level of the gymnasium affiliated there. As an athlete, he was multiple Austrian champion in junior classes and Vorarlberg record holder in swimming . From 1991 Garry Thür attended the University of St. Gallen , where he studied economics, law and social sciences, which he completed in 1996 with a licentiate in economics ( lic. Oec. HSG ). His licensing work dealt with customer focus in local government .

After completing his studies, Thür started working as a partner in HAT Public Consulting Public Organizations GmbH in 1997 as a consultant for organizational development in the private sector and in public administration. In 2003 he met the entrepreneur Hubert Rhomberg from the Rhomberg Group , who brought him into the company, where he initially became head of strategy and business development. From 2005 to 2006 he was also authorized signatory of the Rhomberg V1 GmbH, which belongs to the group . In 2006 he was with his family to Australia dispatched to where the management with Rhomberg Rail Australia Pty Ltd to take over. As part of his eight-year stay abroad in Australia, Thür finally dropped his maiden name in everyday use and since then has only used the first name "Garry", which is easier to pronounce in English .

In 2014 he returned to Austria and became managing director of Rhomberg Rail Consult GmbH and Rhomberg Bahnechnik GmbH . From 2017 to 2018 he was also a member of the supervisory board of RSRS GmBH Railway Infrastructure Projects , another member of the Rhomberg Group. He is still the managing director of several Rhomberg group members: For example RT Technologie GmbH (since 2014), Rhomberg Sersa Rail Holding GmbH (since 2019), LRS Rail Milling GmbH (since 2019), Rhomberg Rail Consult GmbH (since 2019) and Rhomberg Sersa International GmbH (since 2019).

Political activity

Thür has been committed to UNOS - Entrepreneurial Austria , the Chamber of Commerce faction of NEOS , since July 2019 . In Vorarlberg he is the Deputy State Spokesman for UNOS. For the state elections in Vorarlberg 2019 , Garry Thür ran for third place on the NEOS state list and third place in all four districts. Although Fabienne Lackner, the state chairwoman of the NEOS youth organization JUNOS - Junge liberale NEOS , received more preferential votes than Thür in the Feldkirch electoral district and could have moved in there via a basic mandate, the state party decided that Thür should be given preference. Top candidate Sabine Scheffknecht , who had run for first place on the list in all districts, therefore accepted the basic mandate in the Feldkirch district, Johannes Gasser , who placed second in the regional lists, accepted the basic mandate in the Bregenz district and Garry Thür was able to take the mandate on the state list. Garry Thür is one of three members of the NEOS Landtag Club in the Landtag in the 31st legislative period .

Private life

Garry Thür is married and has one child. He lives with his family in the Vorarlberg state capital Bregenz .

In March 2020, Thür tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic in Austria . Sabine Scheffknecht announced this in a session of the state parliament after Markus Wallner had informed the MPs about the current situation in Vorarlberg. In April he recovered from the illness and was able to work from home again.
