The 95th Giro d'Italia kicked off in the Danish town of Herning on Jutland . The race opened with a short, flat individual time trial over 8.7 kilometers through the city center. 17 curves made the course technically demanding, and the last part of the route ran a little outside the built-up area and was therefore exposed to winds of up to 33 km / h.

At 3:40 p.m., the Venezuelan Jackson Rodríguez from the Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela team started the Giro d'Italia 2012 as the first driver with a cool 8 ° Celsius air temperature and light cloud cover. In the fight for the day's victory, however, he played no role, instead was es Ramūnas Navardauskas ( Garmin-Barracuda ), who held the best time for almost two hours with 10:48 min. Numerous other drivers only narrowly failed on this mark before Manuele Boaro from the Danish team Saxo Bank was seven seconds faster than Navardauskas. In front of numerous spectators on the edge of the track, the young Italian didn't wear the overall leader's pink jersey either, as Alex Rasmussen (Garmin) and Geraint Thomas ( Sky ProCycling ) were even able to stay under the time of 10:40 min. After all, it was the young American Taylor Phinney from the BMC Racing Team who gave the competition no chance with an unmatched 10:26 min and celebrated the greatest success of his career, even though he was just above Thomas' best time halfway through the route . The big favorites for the overall victory did not play a role at the beginning. Roman Kreuziger from the Astana Pro Team was the best in 28th place, 36 seconds behind time trial specialist Phinney, Ivan Basso ( Liquigas-Cannondale ) also lost just three seconds more, while Fränk Schleck , José Rujano , John Gadret and the official Defending champion Michele Scarponi ( Lampre-ISD ) , who started in Maglia Rosa, lost over a minute on the first day of the race.

The second stage of the tour led the field over completely flat 206 kilometers through western Jutland , start and finish were again in Herning. With light cloud cover and temperatures just under 10 ° Celsius, the field first started moving westwards and towards the coast, shortly after the official start, the Belgian Olivier Kaisen from the Lotto Belisol team attacked . He was followed by Miguel Ángel Rubiano ( Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela ) and Alfredo Balloni ( Farnese Vini-Selle Italia ). After almost fifty kilometers, the breakaway riders reached the seashore in Söndervig , where the day's intermediate sprint was carried out, which Rubiano won. Then there were fifty kilometers directly on the coast, in some cases the route even led over dikes. Contrary to some expectations, the weak wind that day did not play a role, the field was not divided by a wind edge.

In Lemvig , the drivers then reached the northernmost point of this tour of Italy, where the refreshment zone was set up and it went back inland and south back to Herning. The first mountain classification of the race on Österbjerg, an ascent of just one kilometer, also took place here. It was Alfredo Balloni who was the first driver ever to secure the tour's new Maglia Verde in the runaway sprint . In the back of the field, however, not only the sprinter teams, but also the teams of the class drivers who wanted to keep their captains in front positions in the field, set the pace, the three outliers were set again forty kilometers from the finish. Then the Dane Lars Bak from Lotto-Belisol attacked and was able to pull out more than forty seconds ahead of the peloton at times, but he too had to give up his attempt 17 kilometers before the end.

The race was overshadowed by numerous falls, including Mark Renshaw and Alexander Kristoff in the last corner before the finish . No rider was seriously injured in these falls. Eight kilometers from the finish, the Maglia Rosa Taylor Phinney finally had a defect, but with the help of his BMC teammate Danilo Wyss , the American made it back to the field and thus defended the overall lead. World champion Mark Cavendish from Sky finally won the day in the mass sprint ahead of his HTC teammate Matthew Goss ( Orica-GreenEdge ) and the surprisingly strong French Geoffrey Soupe from FDJ-BigMat and thus took over the red jersey of the best on points.

On the third day, the field around Horsens crossed over 190 flat kilometers of eastern Jutland and at the same time completed its last part of the day in Denmark. After the start, the route led first south, then north again and through Horsens. The northern outskirts of the city were crossed in a large loop. The breakaway group of the day was formed by the local Mads Christensen from Team Saxo Bank , the Swiss Reto Hollenstein from the German Team NetApp , the Dutchman Martijn Keizer ( Vacansoleil-DCM ), the Spaniard Miguel Mínguez ( Euskaltel-Euskadi ) with just under 10 ° Celsius and slightly cloudy ) as well as Alfredo Balloni , who was represented at the top like the day before, and Ramūnas Navardauskas ( Garmin-Barracuda ) in sixth place overall . The field had the six under control at all times and did not allow a lead of more than five minutes. Keizer secured the intermediate sprint of the day in Hovegård north of Horsens ahead of Navardauskas, who was able to improve to fifth place in the overall standings thanks to the time credit of four seconds.

After the refreshment point in Kattrup , the only mountain classification of the day was up, a 5.4 kilometer long but on average only 1.6% steep climb. As on the day before, Alfredo Balloni was the first to secure full points and thus consolidated his lead in the battle for the blue jersey. After the drivers had come back south to Horsens, where there were still three 14-kilometer finish laps to be had, the breakaway group was set up again 32 kilometers from the finish, only Christensen resisted about eight kilometers longer than his five escape companions. Shortly after he was caught up too, the Dane Lars Bak ( Lotto Belisol Team ) pulled away like the day before , but was never able to gain more than twenty seconds advantage and was swallowed again after nine kilometers from the field. So everything was ready for a mass sprint in the sometimes very narrow streets in Horsens. After perfect preparatory work by his GreenEdge team, the Australian Matthew Goss finally secured the day's victory after his second place the day before and, thanks to the time credit of twenty seconds, moved up to eighth place in the overall classification.

The red jersey also conquered Goss. He also benefited from a fall 100 meters from the finish line caused by the Italian Roberto Ferrari from Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela . Ferrari suddenly changed its line in the sprint, so that the Mark Cavendish behind him could no longer evade and fell heavily. The wearer of the "Maglia Rossa" suffered severe abrasions, but was able to reach the goal on foot, in contrast to overall leader Taylor Phinney , who was also involved in the fall and sustained an ankle injury that was stitched with three stitches the following day had to become. Phinney finished after a long treatment and defended his pink jersey. Ferrari was later downgraded from fifth to last stage position for its unfair behavior, received a fine and thirty seconds of penalty.

The starting phase of the Giro 2012 in Denmark ended with this part of the day. The following Tuesday the transfer to Italy took place , where the race in Verona continued on Wednesday . A total of around 350,000 spectators followed the Giro in Denmark, which far exceeded the organizers' expectations.

After a day of rest and the transfer from Denmark to Italy , the Giro d'Italia 2012 resumed operations in Verona with a team time trial over 33 kilometers. The starting point was right in front of the Church of San Zeno Maggiore in Verona. The route led over the first intermediate time measurement in Nassar to the north in the direction of San Pietro in Cariano , where the turning point was passed. Then it went back to the southeast via the second split time measurement in Nassar to the starting center of Verona. The goal was placed in Piazza Bra in front of the Verona Arena . Much of the way to and from the city was on the same road, so that the drivers only had one lane available and the teams sometimes met each other directly on the course.

In sunny weather and an air temperature of over 20 ° Celsius, the Ag2r La Mondiale team was the first team to roll off the launch pad at 3:25 p.m. As expected , the formation around captain John Gadret had nothing to do with the outcome of the stage and lost 1:45 minutes to the winner. As many experts suspected in advance, this was called Garmin-Barracuda . Only the surprisingly strong Katusha team with Joaquim Rodríguez could only defy me for five seconds and kept the best time for a long time. Garmin rider Ramūnas Navardauskas was also the first Lithuanian to win the overall leader's pink jersey because the previous leader Taylor Phinney was weakened and had problems with his teammates due to the consequences of his ankle injury, which he sustained after a fall on the third stage to follow. The American also got taxed in a curve and hit the grass verge with his bike, but was able to avoid another fall. Despite these difficulties, the BMC team finished in tenth place. In the overall standings, Navardauskas' team-mate Alex Rasmussen was actually better placed than the Lithuanian before the stage , but the Dane had to let his team go early on and so missed the chance for the "Maglia Rosa". There were only very short time gaps between the teams with the other favorites. The third-placed Astana Pro Team around Roman Kreuziger and the twelfth-placed Lampre-ISD with Michele Scarponi and Damiano Cunego were only twelve seconds apart. Only Colnago-CSF Inox around Domenico Pozzovivo (+ 1:12 min), Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela with José Rujano (+ 1:44 min), Ag2r and Euskaltel-Euskadi with Mikel Nieve (+ 2:22 min) suffered more sensitive losses . The German team NetApp reached thirteenth place on the day, 43 seconds behind the winner.
