The Goethe-Gymnasium is located in the western Hamburg district of Lurup (Altona district) and is an all-day school with around 830 students.

In 1969 it was initially founded as the "Langbargheide branch" of the Ernst-Schlee-Gymnasium . In the following period, own buildings were built directly adjacent to the Langbargheide school (elementary school). The new school was later named "Gymnasium Rispenweg". The grammar school has a long tradition in music and sports and offers upper school profiles with a focus on music / aesthetics, social science, natural science and sports education. From grade 8, students can acquire the Latinum.

Location and size

The school is located in the Hamburg district of Lurup in the immediate vicinity of the sports arenas at the Altonaer Volkspark . The average number of students is 800, with a slight upward trend. The number of the last three registration rounds for class 5 was 130 (2015), 116 (2016) and most recently 126 (2017).

The development in the district shows a mixture of single-family houses, terraced houses and rental apartments of various sizes. The district has a very high population density, with a share of almost 40%, an above-average number of residents with a migration background, and almost a quarter of the households have children, with a third of all children in minimum income. The cultural and social diversity of the district is also reflected in the student body of the Goethe-Gymnasium.

history

In the 1960 / 70s Hamburg built many high schools. One of them in Lurup, at that time still under the name Rispenweg Gymnasium . On April 9, 1969, classes began for around 170 students in grades 5 and 6 in the pavilions and buildings of the Langbargheide school.

The foundation stone was laid in 1969

The official laying of the foundation stone took place on June 26, 1969, at the same time as the inauguration of the three so-called single houses, House 1-3. The rest of the site was then fallow. Several construction works followed as the school grew rapidly. In 1972 the double H wing was finished, in 1974 the small gym and the technical wing and in 1976 the administration wing with break hall, music rooms and the caretaker's apartment was finished.

In 1975 pupils attended the upper school for the first time, which in 1977 the first high school graduates left. The number of pupils grew steadily, especially due to children from Schleswig-Holstein, the number of pupils rose to 1180 in 1979. The school's music offerings experienced a great boom, in the mid-1980s there was a school orchestra, a chamber orchestra and several choirs, divided according to age groups. The tradition of Christmas concerts began as well as that of choir tours. With 66 teachers, the teachers' room was too small at the beginning of the 1980s, but almost at the same time a measure by the school senator at the time led to a rapid decline in the number of pupils, because pupils from Schleswig-Holstein were banned from attending school in Hamburg.

In 1982 the official name was given on the 150th anniversary of Goethe's death . However, the school did not cultivate an elitist image, but oriented itself towards the requirements of the district, including the fact that it was one of the first high schools to successfully introduce vocational orientation as early as the 1980s . The school has been certified several times for this.

Headmaster Wiechers retired in 1990 and Joachim Land became his successor. No longer needed due to the falling number of students, the last makeshift pavilions will be demolished at this time. The number of pupils continued to decline and approached an existence-threatening number of 500. As a result, the teaching staff developed concepts to turn the Goethe-Gymnasium into an all-day school . The successor of the Land school principal, Egon Tegge, was committed to this new idea when he was selected in 2002.

The conversion into a bound all-day school was approved in 2005. Funds from the social district development and from the school authority for two schools (Goethe-Gymnasium and Langbargheide School) also enabled the construction of a multi-purpose hall, which was inaugurated in 2007. The background to this was the 2006 World Cup , as the large sports hall could be rented to FIFA as a base for the volunteers. The 25 years of use of the sports hall and the sports field required a renovation of the sports facilities, which could be realized with money from the school authorities. The modernization also had a positive effect on the sports offer at the Goethe-Gymnasium, which is a second focus of the school in addition to music.

The Goethe-Gymnasium received a new cafeteria building in 2007. The students get their lunch in the new auditorium , but there are also performances and events of the school and the district. The official name is FORUM .

In 2014, the Goethe-Gymnasium choir received an invitation from the New York concert promoter DCINY (Distinguished Concerts International New York) to participate in the American premiere of a work by Karl Jenkins at Carnegie Hall . The organizer became aware of the choir via the Internet and described it as “ one of the world's top amateur and student based choral ensembles ” (German: “one of the world's best amateur and student orchestras”). In January 2015, the donation-financed, almost one-week trip of around 60 students and teachers to New York City took place with a performance in the Isaac Stern Auditorium .

In the same year, headmaster Egon Tegge retired. His deputy, Karsten Stuhlmacher, took over the management of the school on a temporary basis until his successor was found.

The Goethe-Gymnasium also received two refugee classes in 2015 because the nearby reception center could no longer provide space for schooling the children. When the classes were to be moved back to the initial reception after a short time, the staff and teachers successfully campaigned for the refugee classes to remain as part of the school community. The classes were converted into so-called IV classes at the beginning of 2017. The aim is to prepare the children in such a way that they can take part in regular lessons as quickly as possible.

In 2017 Frank Scherler took over the school management.

School profile

All day concept

As early as 2002, the school had designed the establishment of a real all-day school and, after the introduction of the eight-level grammar school, applied for and then implemented the conversion into a bound all-day school . All vintages have been included in this concept since summer 2007. In this context, a joint canteen / auditorium for the Goethe-Gymnasium and the Langbargheide school was built, which is used by the schools in cooperation with the district.

Due to its special profile, the high school has a nationwide unique model of the all-day school concept: Since there are a number of cross-school ensembles (grades 5–12) in the musical / aesthetic area that work in the early evening and also correspondingly for the sporting area (school teams) applies, the bound all-day school is only guaranteed in terms of the amount of time, the presence of the students can be designed depending on participation in the additional courses and projects. A support offer for pupils with deficits and with special talents is woven into the concept. This offers around 60 courses for grades 7 to 10 and 20 courses for grades 5/6, with a particular focus on music and sport, some in cooperation with local associations.

Jobs for teachers

As one of the first schools in Germany, the Goethe-Gymnasium succeeded in ensuring that all teachers have their own desk in 3 to 6-person offices in the school, all workplaces are connected through the school's own network, so that school or own computers and Notebooks can be connected.

The teachers' room was designed as a space for intercollegial communication, the so-called teacher lounge - corrections, preparations or research are carried out in one's own office, the necessary exchange takes place in a relaxed atmosphere. The redesign process was scientifically supported by Uwe Schaarschmidt and evaluated through a final investigation.

This measure has an impact on

  • job satisfaction, as there can be a clearer separation between working hours and free time, attendance at school increases significantly, many teachers move many or even all parts of their work to school,
  • the better compatibility of family and work, as many teachers (and especially part-time employees) do their work in school with small children and have made clear agreements with their partners,
  • the cooperation and teamwork, since materials can be exchanged more easily and joint preparations and team meetings are much better possible and
  • on the entire working atmosphere, as the increased presence and / or the collegial exchange in the small offices considerably increases the feeling of togetherness.

Educational concepts

integration

As a grammar school with a relatively high proportion (around 30%) of students with a migration background (communication at home with at least one parent takes place in another language), the Goethe grammar school is conceptually oriented accordingly. This includes counseling services and parenting work by department heads and counseling teams, building blocks for the aspect of social learning, remedial teaching by teachers and students, especially in the observation level, especially in German, and targeted remedial offers in the intermediate level. About a third of the high school graduates in recent years are also migrants. Such graduates have repeatedly been accepted into the circle of the German National Academic Foundation .

social learning

At the Goethe-Gymnasium, in addition to technical education, social learning is another educational focus. A variety of measures are intended to advance the students in so-called social skills . For this purpose, a team of class teachers (m / f) is responsible for class management throughout the observation level and in grade 7 and a weekly class council hour is established in the timetable in all grades from 5 to 10, in which the children learn, among other things, to address problems in a cooperative manner and solve. Cooperative tasks and projects are specifically used as social forms in the classroom, and cross-age pedagogy also plays an important role in many projects, particularly in the field of music. An anti-bullying week is also part of the standard concept in order to strengthen cohesion and avoid exclusion. All class trips from 6 to 10 have the focus on community experience and at the same time have an adventure and sports pedagogical orientation.

The educational field of pedagogy also serves social learning, in which the students have the opportunity to be trained to become prefects or conflict managers or later to acquire athletic trainer certificates in upper school. The year-round Prefect training in class 9 leads via the mentor and supervisory function in class 10 to courses in pedagogy from year 10 onwards. From these courses, the students are instructed and employed with supervision in the teaching and mentoring area: Work at least one hour per week the upper school students either as supplementary workers in the neighboring school to support the socially disadvantaged (financed by the Philip Breuel Foundation) or take on remedial classes in small groups at their own school, especially in German (grades 5/6) or lead afternoon courses in the sports area in the All day school.

Focus

foreign languages

All fifth graders in the school start with English as their first foreign language. The sequence of languages was changed even before the introduction of the 8-level grammar school.

In addition to a sound knowledge of English, the high school graduates acquire at least basic knowledge of another modern foreign language, with the aim of being well equipped for the competition for a training position and at the same time fit for the European training and job market. Therefore, the school offers French and Spanish to choose from in the 6th grade. The foreign language concept enables a third modern foreign language to be learned either as an alternative or in addition in grades 10 to 12. In grade 8 there is also the option of choosing Latin and thus acquiring the Latinum .

Computer science and robotics

The school was named one of the 10 best IT-fittest in Germany - from an initiative launched by Chancellor Angela Merkel and Microsoft founder Bill Gates . A 6th place in the nationwide IT beaver competition and participation in other nationwide competitions such as the RoboCup German Open (RoboCopJunior Teams) and FieldRobotJunior together with a modern IT infrastructure as well as computer and robot equipment at the school form a further focus.

music

An important focus of the school is on the musical area: there are always three choirs (with over 200 members), a classical school orchestra (with up to 50 participants) and a big band as well as other project-related ensembles. The performances (including a summer revue, orchestral concert, Christmas concert, Singspiel, big band concerts, etc.) are on the one hand a cultural offer within the district, on the other hand the ensembles of the school are out and about in the Michel , in the theater , on Kampnagel , etc. To encourage young talent, the school organizes instrumental lessons (sometimes for more than 80 students, included in the all-day editions) for many instruments (violin, cello, saxophone, clarinet, drums, bass, trombone, trumpet, horn, guitar, flute, etc.).

Upper level profile

The school offers four profiles in the upper level, which are used not only by its own students, but also by students from other schools. A profile-related professional orientation along with a corresponding professional internship is mandatory for all profiles:

Upper level profiles at the Goethe Gymnasium
Musical / aesthetic profile
(KlangWeltBild)
It is a so-called Y-profile, i. H. the students choose either music or art as a profile-giving subject, but are taught together in the related areas of history and philosophy as well as the interdisciplinary seminar.
Scientific profile
(MenschMachtNatur - Can we still be saved?)
The profile-giving subject is physics, which focuses on people and their interaction with the environment. As a result, chemistry and geography are integrated as accompanying subjects alongside the seminar.
Sports pedagogical profile
(moving yourself and making others move)
The profiling subjects are sport and biology, combined with the subjects of pedagogy and PGW.

The aim of this profile is to qualify students for the sport sector by training them in the coaching and pedagogical field as well as in the economic dimension of sport. This includes B. that they acquire trainer qualifications in cooperation with the HSB and at the same time are professionally advanced and coached in the educational courses of the school, if they are e.g. B. work with younger students in afternoon courses or in the neighboring elementary school.

Social science profile
(society and media)
The profile-giving subject is politics, society, economics and is linked here with the subjects of computer science and performing games. The aim is to examine the influence of the new media on social change as well as the economic and political dimensions of the media and IT sector. Opportunities and risks of this development are reflected and implemented creatively through own representation attempts in the acting and / or filmic area.
