Kirr is an island in the Darß-Zingster Boddenkette south of Zingst on the German Baltic Sea coast . It is separated from the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula by the Zingster River . The island belonging to the municipality of Zingst is located in the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park . Today's island was divided into two parts until the second half of the 20th century, when the two islands were called Großer or Große Kirr and Kleiner or Kleine Kirr .

The island has a length of 3.5 km and a maximum width of 1.5 km. The island, which rises only one meter above sea level, is located in the Barther Bodden in the Baltic Sea, just a few meters south of the Zingst resort . On the east side of the island is the small settlement of Klein Kirr ; to the north are the remains of an old homestead.

The Kirr island railway leads from the jetty to Klein Kirr .

Flora and fauna

The island is covered with salt marshes and traversed by troughs . It offers a variety of birds, especially waders such as dunlins , ruff , red thighs , godwit , oyster fishermen , avocets and lapwing, but also black-headed gulls , an ideal breeding area. In autumn it serves as a sleeping place for several thousand cranes for a few weeks. Therefore, entering and mooring on the island without a permit is prohibited.

history

Around 1700 the Kirr had three owners, the Amt Barth (331.6 hectares), the town of Barth (219 hectares) and the Horn family from Divitz (20 hectares). The island was managed from a homestead. Most of the time, the island was used by several tenants who grazed cattle and also ran agriculture. They were also allowed to fish around the island. The Kirr is still partly used as a pasture . To get the cows to pasture, there is a cattle ferry from the Zingst district of Müggenburg to the island.
