Grand Prix of the GDR (motorcycle)
The GDR Grand Prix for motorcycles was a motorcycle race that was held between 1958 and 1977 on the then 8.7 km long road circuit of the Sachsenring near Hohenstein-Ernstthal . From 1961 to 1972 the GDR Grand Prix was part of the motorcycle world championship , as was the (then West German) German Grand Prix .
The races attracted hundreds of thousands of spectators every year. After the West German Dieter Braun won the 250cc race in 1971 and was frenetically celebrated by the spectators, especially when the (West) German national anthem was played , the race was only open to starters from the Eastern Bloc from 1973 and lost its World Cup status .
From 1978 the event only carried the title Grand Prix of the ADMV of the GDR .
The record winner is the Italian Giacomo Agostini , who was victorious ten times, always on MV Agusta .
