Kouřim (German Gurim (1391), also Kurim (1088), Curim (1167), Kaurzim , Kaurim ) is a small town in Central Bohemia with about 1800 inhabitants.
history
Kouřim is one of the oldest cities in Bohemia. Already at the time of the Slavic conquest, a large settlement surrounded by a wall was built on a hill southeast of today's city. It is said to have been originally founded by Čech's brother Lech , later it was the center of the Zlitschanen tribe. Around the middle of the 10th century, the settlement of "Alt Kouřim" ( Stará Kouřim in Czech ) ended and the town was moved to the plain on the Kouřimka River.
Kouřim is mentioned for the first time in 1130 when it was owned by the Vyšehrad chapter . From around 1200 the city belonged to the Diepolding people , from 1261 it is occupied as a royal city . Around this time the Gothic St. Stephen's Church was built, which is still a dominant feature of the city today.
Kouřim was an important town throughout the Middle Ages, which was able to maintain its position even after the Hussite period. Even in the early modern period it was still important as the seat of the district chief, but lost track of general developments in the age of industrialization. Since the seat of the district was moved to Kolín in 1850 , the number of inhabitants has steadily decreased.
On February 15, 1882, the place received a railway connection through the local railway Peček – Zasmuk with branches .
The medieval city fortifications with the Prague Gate were declared a national cultural monument in 1995 .
