The handball community Bensheim / Auerbach was created in 2002 through the merger of the handball departments of the two Bensheim clubs TSV Rot-Weiß Auerbach and DJK-SSG Bensheim .
history
The syndicate is known nationwide above all for its 1st women's team, which played several seasons in the Bundesliga . The greatest success of the team, which at that time was still playing under the name TSV Rot-Weiß Auerbach, was the German runner-up in 1977. In the final, which was held on April 3 in West Berlin, the team was defeated by TSV GutsMuths Berlin with 7:12 goals. In the same year the team lost the final of the DHB Cup on May 8th in Vellmar against TuS Eintracht Minden at 10:18. As early as 1975, the team was in the final of the DHB Cup, which Rüsselsheim lost to Guths Muths Berlin 4-7.
Since the 2006/07 season, the first team has the official nickname "Flames" and uses its own logo. With 25 consecutive seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga from 1988 to 2013, the HSG (including the seasons of TSV Rot-Weiß Auerbach) holds the record for the longest uninterrupted membership in the 2nd Bundesliga and the longest membership in the 2nd Bundesliga overall. In addition to the "eternal first division" Bayer Leverkusen and HC Leipzig , who have always played in the 1st Bundesliga and GDR Oberliga since the introduction of the top division, the HSG (or TSV) is the only club that has been in the 1975 always played in the first or second division.
present
Since the 2014/15 season, the 1st women's team at HSG Bensheim / Auerbach has been playing in the 2nd handball Bundesliga again . After only one year in the first division, the team rose from bottom of the table. She was trained by Florian Bauer. The preseason was marked by a large number of coach changes. The season ended with Claudia and Helmut Richter as coaches. Interim coach Joachim Rath resigned on March 2, 2014 after just under three weeks. Rath replaced Gordana Čović, who was dismissed on February 14, 2014 after only six weeks in the coaching office. Čović succeeded Thorsten Schmid , who had trained the team from August 2010 and was dismissed on January 6, 2014. Schmid's predecessors were Lazăr Constantin Cojocar and Ildikó Barna .
With the 2016/17 season, Heike Ahlgrimm took over as coach at the Flames and led the largely newly built team back into the handball Bundesliga in just one year .
The home games of the first women's team usually take place in the Weststadthalle on the Berliner Ring in Bensheim, which has almost 2000 seats . The 2nd women's team became champions of the Oberliga Hessen in 2009. In the 2009/10 season the team qualified for the 3rd division from which they were relegated in 2010/11. The team currently plays in the Oberliga Hessen. The first men's team plays in the district league A.
Auerbacher Handball Sport und Marketing GmbH is responsible for the sporting and commercial management, administration and marketing of the women’s performance area at HSG Bensheim / Auerbach , the main shareholders of which are TSV Rot-Weiß Auerbach, the Handball Fördererkreis e. V., as well as some private individuals.
