Education and research in Hamburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Education and research in Hamburg is characterized by a wide range of different institutions in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg , which form the basis for the various areas of teaching, science and research. These include general and vocational schools, universities, training and further education institutions as well as important scientific and research institutions.

Elementary level

The elementary level includes pre-school educational institutions, primarily kindergartens, day-care centers and pre-schools.

Primary and secondary level

The primary level in Hamburg currently comprises 4 years of compulsory schooling, the secondary level 6 years. Secondary level also includes all vocational schools.

Reform of the secondary school in Hamburg

A two-pillar model was implemented in Hamburg for the 2010/11 school year. In addition to the grammar school, there is only the district school as a second form of school. All old school forms are being phased out. The isolated Hauptschule had already been abolished in the 2008/2009 school year.

The district school will in future offer all school-leaving qualifications up to and including the Abitur after 13 years. The grammar school leads to university entrance qualification after only 12 years. As before, which child goes to which school is initially decided after the fourth grade and then finally after the sixth grade. From the 7th grade onwards, children may no longer be forced to go to the district school from the grammar school. This is only possible with the consent of the parents.

Hansa College

The only college in Hamburg is the Hansa-Kolleg, a state institute for obtaining the general higher education entrance qualification, which is subordinate to the Hamburg authority for education and sport. It was founded in Hamburg-Wellingsbüttel in 1962 and moved to its current location in Barmbek-Süd in 1996 .

The Hansa-Kolleg takes schoolchildren who have completed vocational training or who have at least three years of professional experience in day classes to the general university entrance qualification, which enables them to study all subjects.

Admission depends on passing an exam, which takes place around April. Starting in August of each year, classes take place Monday through Friday during the day. The training usually lasts three years. The options offered allow the students to set priorities according to their educational path.

Attendance at the Hansa-Kolleg is funded by the Bafög if the respective conditions are met. Funding is usually granted up to the age of 30.

Since summer 2001 there has been a dormitory right next to the college, in which many of the college students are at home. The apartment consists of 2-, 3- and 4-room shared apartments and costs 270 euros per month per room in shared accommodation (as of 2016).

State night schools

The two state evening schools, St. Georg Evening High School and Evening School in front of the Holstentor, are institutions of the second educational path for working adults. Evening schoolchildren are given the opportunity to acquire the first and middle educational qualifications in one to two years, and the advanced technical college entrance qualification or the general university entrance qualification in two or three further school years. At the evening schools, people with very different requirements (school education, professional experience, age, cultural area, nationality, language skills) learn with one another in order to open up new opportunities in training and work. Going through this learning process to the best of your ability is associated with high demands and particular stress for the learners.
