Geographical location

Heidenau is located northwest of the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park . The municipality belongs to the Tostedt joint municipality , which has its administrative seat in the municipality of Tostedt .

The community was formed in 1928 from the places Everstorf and Avensen.

From 1945 to 1957 Heidenau was a reception center for around 4,000 displaced persons (DPs), survivors of the concentration camps, forced laborers and civilian Eastern European workers. Two grave fields with 81 victims of the Second World War bear witness to this in the Heidenau municipal cemetery. Forced laborers and inmates of the UNRRA Displaced Persons - Camp Heidenau, including 35 children, mainly from the former Soviet Union and Ukraine.
