The Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike (HEFT), also known as the Ronald Reagan Turnpike , is an expressway in the US state of Florida . It runs a good 77 kilometers from Florida City to Miramar in the counties of Miami-Dade and Broward . The street is hidden under the name Florida State Road 821 and is operated by the Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (FTE).

Route

The street is considered the outer bypass of the greater Miami area. It is signposted as being part of the Turnpike Mainline , but the State Road number is different .

The route begins in Florida City , where it branches off US Highway 1 and first heads northeast. The eponymous city of Homestead borders directly north on Florida City. After 20 kilometers, the US 1 is crossed at Cutler Bay , which continues from here to Miami in the northeast . The Homestead Extension, however, continues north, where State Roads 994 and 992 are first crossed one after the other , before the Don Shula Expressway (SR 874) also branches off to the northeast at Kendall . The expressway continues north, where State Roads 94 , 976 and 90 ( US 41 , Tamiami Trail ) are crossed to the junction with the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) near Doral . Between the Tamiami Trail and the Dolphin Expressway , there is the greatest volume of traffic on the route, with 178,000 vehicles a day.

The Homestead Extension then crosses US Highway 27 and Interstate 75 , making a right turn to the east. In the city of Miramar, State Roads 823 and 817 are finally crossed before the route joins the Turnpike Mainline 5.5 km north of the Golden Glades Interchange .

toll

Since February 19, 2011, tolls have been collected electronically along the entire route. On this day, the toll booths, where previously it was still possible to pay in cash, were replaced by toll bridges. The total cost of a trip from Florida City to Miramar is $ 4.00 ($ 3.00 with SunPass transponder as of 2012). Toll bridges are about every 19 km along the route.

history

After the Turnpike Mainline was completed in 1964, the Turnpike Authority at that time sought to extend the existing route. Construction of the toll road finally began in July 1971. The northernmost section to US Highway 27 was opened on May 1, 1973, the construction of which cost $ 22 million and its use cost $ 0.40. By the end of 1974, the entire route to Florida City could finally be opened to traffic. The total cost of using a route at the time was $ 0.80. On February 2, 1989, with a fee of $ 0.50 per toll station, the total cost increased to $ 2.00. They were finally increased to $ 3.00 on July 9, 1995. Most recently, prices were increased on March 7, 2004, when use without a SunPass transponder rose to $ 4.00.

In November 2009 it was announced that as of February 19, 2011 the possibility of paying the toll in cash would be discontinued. The toll stations were replaced by electronic toll bridges. Since then, payment has only been made via SunPass transponder or via a subsequent payment by invoice at the increased price.
