IC 4221 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 124 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 50,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5073 and NGC 5094 .
The supernovae SN 2002bs ( Type-Ia ) and SN 2015C (Type-IIP) were observed here.
The object was discovered by DeLisle Stewart in July 1899 .
