The END (The Energy Never Dies) is the fifth studio album by the American hip-hop group The Black Eyed Peas . It was released on June 5, 2009 in several versions and recording formats. This album is marked by a clear departure from the previous funk-heavy style of the group. The French house DJ David Guetta was hired for the production of the album . It has sold over 11 million times worldwide, according to sources.

Title & Cover

The album name was already being considered when Fergie released her solo debut "The Dutchess" in 2006. Originally it was supposed to get the name "Evolution". However, it was discarded after it became known that Ciara's second album, which was to be released that same year (2006), would have the same name. Then the title "From Roots to Fruits" was discussed. However, the group decided that this title would be more suitable for a future greatest hits album. So the name was changed again. This time in "The Energy Never Dies". In the end it was shortened in "The END" and confirmed by will.i.am in an interview in which he promoted his third studio album "Songs About Girls".

The cover of the album unites the faces of all four members into one. For this, each face was individually scanned and then merged into one.

publication

The album was originally scheduled to be released on October 15, 2008, but The Black Eyed Peas were still working on other songs. The first single Boom Boom Pow was released on March 10, 2009 and was sold 465,000 times via download shops in the United States within a very short time. The song reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian charts. On June 3, the album The END was released , which also reached the top position in the US album hit parade. In the other countries, however, the success was somewhat weaker than in the previous Monkey Business . The second release for the album I Gotta Feeling was released on June 16, 2009 and was also a success.

The album was received mixed with critics. Dani Fromm from the German e-zine laut.de criticizes the group's style change.

"Instead of setting a trend of whatever kind, you pant with hanging tongues after the electric train that was worn out years ago."

- Dani Fromm, laut.de

You FM's Marcus Wares , on the other hand, praises the zeitgeist of the album.

“The Black Eyed Peas have now perfected this style and made it suitable for the masses. "The END" is black music in tune with the times and for every taste. "

- Marcus Wares, You FM

The Austrian music journalist Philipp Schmidt from the magazine NOW! sees positive sides on the album.

"If there is still a group of world youth who can fidget uniformly to their beat today, it will be the Black Eyed Peas in summer 2009."

- Philipp Schmidt, NOW!

The site Metacritic calculated from 15 reviews of English-language media with 60% an average rating. The Allmusic company awarded stars.

style

The album is heavily influenced by the style of electronic dance music , as producer and singer Will.i.am makes clear.

“This is clearly a club album. Traditionally we are always influenced by different countries, so there are Indian elements and dub music again. This time the electro influence comes to the fore a bit more. I would say the plate is a bit more futuristic and ideal for burning calories. "

Promo singles

As part of the release of The END, one promotional single per week was released within three weeks of the album's release. These were first presented personally by will.i.am on his Dipdive blog, and then published in all English-language iTunes stores as "Countdown to The END".
Will.i.am said several times that these promotional singles should not be confused with "normal" singles, but so far two of these have been or are being released as singles from The END.

"Imma Be" was the first promo single. It was released on May 17 in the UK, May 18 in Australia and May 19, 2009 worldwide.

"Here is another song from THE END
its called" imma be "
this is the official version…
no its not the next single…
its just a song for you guys to enjoy…
before the album comes out we will preview other songs as well…
"keep dippin 'in on dipdive" "

- will.i.am

"Alive" was the second promo single. It was released on May 24 in the UK, May 25 in Australia, and worldwide on May 16, 2009.

"Alive is a song about love ...
its about a relationship ...
when the person makes you feel new ...
when the one yoiu love makes you feel like nothing negitive in the world matters ...
" alive "
i am so proud of this songs production ...
listen to the layers, textures and elements ...
:)
i just love this song ... "

- will.i.am

"Meet Me Halfway" was the third and final promo single. It was released on June 1st in Australia and on June 2nd, 2009 worldwide. It was later released as the official third single from The END.

"This song is dedicated to lovers in relationships that have sacrificed so much ...
love hurts ...
and love makes you crazy ...
but love will only last for ever when you make it last ...
listen to the lyrics on this song ...
its about compress, dedication , responsiblity, effort, and of course dreams ...
love is nothing without dreams ...
in this song the woman in love has gone as far as she could for love ...
and she needs her man to meet her half way ...
the artwork i made for this song explains the song perfectly…
(a road, and outerspace)
you know its impossible to drive a car, or walk to outspace…
this picture is 2 people traveling on the path of love trying to meet half way…
one travels by road, the other by the stars ...
and they are to meet in the middle ...
:)
i love this song ... "

- will.i.am

In addition, will.i.am presented "Party All The Time" and "Missing You" including covers on its Dipdive blog before the album was released. "Electric City" followed later with a fan-made cover.

Singles

Boom Boom Pow

Boom Boom Pow lettering

Boom Boom Pow is the first single from the album The END In contrast to earlier songs by the Black Eyed Peas, "Boom Boom Pow" is very futuristic and belongs to the electro-hop genre.
In Germany, "Boom Boom Pow" reached number three in the single charts and was the third most successful single by the Black Eyed Peas to date. In early 2010 it was awarded gold for over 150,000 units sold. In the USA, the single was able to climb to 39th place on the Billboard Hot 100 within three weeks thanks to good airplay. After the song was released, it rose to number 1 with 456,000 copies sold in the fourth week of the chart, where it lasted a total of 12 uninterrupted weeks and became the Black Eyed Peas' first number one single in the USA. Within 23 weeks, Boom Boom Pow sold a total of 4,295,000 downloads in the US, making it the fastest-selling song in the history of the Billboard charts.
The song also reached number one in the respective single charts in Australia , Great Britain and Canada and top 10 positions in over 20 other countries.

Fergie said in an interview with The Insider that the video was taped on March 8, 2009.

The making-of of the video was published on MTV on April 8th.

In an MTV interview it said, “The concept of the video is the rebirth of the Peas in a digital afterlife. In a transformation, we go into some type of birth or cocoon and arrive at the other end in some form of energy. This has parallels with the music industry. Everything is downloaded these days. ”The music video, produced by Mathew Cullen, will celebrate its world premiere on April 18th along with the new Black Eyed Peas channel on Dipdive.

On December 2, 2009, "Boom Boom Pow" received a nomination in the "Best Dance Recording" category for the 52nd Grammy Awards.

On May 5, 2009, a Remix EP was released in addition to the normal single, which is only available as a download. From now on there will be a remix EP for every single from The END.

I gotta feeling

Lettering from I Gotta Feeling

"I Gotta Feeling" is the second single from the album The END and the Black Eyed Peas' most successful single to date. The song was produced by French house DJ David Guetta , who was also responsible for the official remix of the single.
Like the previous single, "I Gotta Feeling" reached number three in the German single charts, but was able to stay in the top chart positions for longer.
In the USA, "I Gotta Feeling" went straight to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and gave the Black Eyed Peas a double lead, because "Boom Boom Pow" was still number one at the time. Thus, the Black Eyed Peas became one of only eleven artists who ever succeeded in this in the history of the Billboard charts. In the following week, the two singles swapped places, so that "I Gotta Feeling" became the Peas' second number one hit in the USA and they were also only the fourth group that ever replaced themselves from first place.
"I Gotta Feeling" led the top ranking in the USA for 14 uninterrupted weeks and gave the Black Eyed Peas a record for the most uninterrupted weeks at number one, namely 26, or to put it simply: half a year (Boom Boom Pow: 12, I Gotta Feeling: 14). Overall, the single reached number one in over 25 countries.

On December 2nd, 2009 "I Gotta Feeling" received two nominations in the categories "Record of the Year" and "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals" for the 52nd Grammy Awards.

On September 15th, 2009 the Remix EP called "Invasion of I Gotta Feeling (Megamix) - EP" was released.

Meet Me Halfway

Meet Me Halfway lettering

"Meet Me Halfway" is the third single from The END. It was released on June 2nd, 2009 as part of "Countdown to The END" as the third and final promotional single for The END.

In Germany, the single rose to number two and reached number one the following week. This makes it the third most successful and third number 1 single from Black Eyed Peas.

In contrast to "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling", "Meet Me Halfway" only made it to seventh place in the USA and was unable to match the success of the previous singles.

However, the Black Eyed Peas in Great Britain and Australia also managed to reach the top of the charts with "Meet Me Halfway". Thus the single is already the third chart topper from The END. Furthermore, it also reached number one in both Belgian charts (Flanders, Wallonia) .

In the vocal part directly after the chorus ("La, la, la"), the melody from Cyndi Lauper's 80s hit Time After Time is used, even if this is nowhere mentioned as a quote.

The accompanying Remix EP was released on November 17th

Imma Be

Imma Be lettering

After "Missing You" was first traded as the fourth single, there were then two country-specific singles. In the US "Imma Be" became the fourth single from The END and in the rest of the world "Rock That Body".

Just like "Meet Me Halfway", "Imma Be" was released as a promo single during "Countdown to The END" on May 19, 2009. Due to heavy downloads, the single was able to rise to number 50 on the Billboard charts and number 48 on the Canadian singles charts after the promo release. "Imma Be" was broadcast on American radio stations on December 15, 2009. The song became the third number one hit for the Black Eyed Peas in the US from that album. This makes them the first group since the Wilson Phillips had the three number one hits from an album in the USA, which the Wilson Phillips succeeded in 1990/1991. Furthermore, the song has so far climbed to number 130 on the UK charts and to number 5 on the Canadian singles charts, although it was not released there as a single. In Australia it placed 7th and became the 13th Top10 hit of the Black Eyed Peas in a row.

At the 52nd Grammy Awards in 2010, the Black Eyed Peas sang a medley of Imma Be and I Gotta Feeling live, whereupon both songs rose sharply in the iTunes charts.

Rock That Body

Rock That Body lettering

"Rock That Body" is the fourth (fifth in the US) and final single from The END. In Germany it was published on March 19 and then rose to number 14 in the singles charts. In Austria it reached number 7 in the charts and thus gave the Black Eyed Peas their fourth top 10 single from "The END" and also the highest chart position for "Rock That Body" to date. It was also number 41 in the Canadian charts, number 16 in the New Zealand and number 11 in the UK singles charts. In Australia the song made it to number 8 and in Ireland to number 9.
